William the Conqueror introduced the lions as his personal coat of arms used two lions on a red background. Then Henry II married Eleanor of Aquitaine and added an extra lion to symbolise his marriage into that family.

So, ironically, the three lions are actually French.

Good point... and actually the first lion, Rollo, is named after the first ruler of Normandy - the Viking Rollo - who was William's great grandfather.
