Even when Islamic killers do have histories of documented mental illness as with Michael Adebowale. We covered this ground in great detail in the Jo Cox thread but the tone of the coverage of these two murders/ terrorist acts differed wildly. As far as the press were concerned Adebowale killed solely as a result of his religious extremism, ignoring his mental illness and shady past whilst Mair was a portrayed as mentally ill lone wolf. Let's be completely frank here, the two cases are disturbing in their similarity, both being public, premeditated murders of active public servants.
The coverage of the trial has been different as well. I'm not accusing the mass media of ignoring it, they clearly haven't but it hasn't been as ubiquitous as the Lee Rigby trial was.
I'm not asking for leniency in either case and even if I was the judiciary will likely do the right thing, as they normally do. What is demonstrated though is the ability of the media to control the narrative and spin it in a way that suits their aims.
