Trouble is you have missed totally the issue on how players age and are not as good.................

I believe Harding would make the team, Virgo definatley would.

It's a very different team that we have now, the one problem with our current squad is consistency. Once Wilkins and the boys get this, we will well and truly be promotion candidates, but it is something that we must strive for. Having said that, I am very excited about this team. A settled goalie, quality fullbacks, options in the centre of defence and two great strikers. We've got a couple of decent midfielders, but until the midfield is sorted out once and for all, I believe we will always lack this consistency we are looking for.

It's an interesting question - but I'm not sure I agree with you with some of those players. The main change I'd make is that Carpenter would definetely be in the team if he was playing like he played for us that season, I also don't think you'd dare leave out Knight as he'd scored 26 goals up to that point! Hart would be in with a shout on the right wing playing like he did back then - I certainly don't see Bowditch being particularly special on this loan spell. Cullip would be ahead of El-Abd and probably Elphick on his form in that season, probably not on his performance last night though! Virgo and Harding would certainly be in with a shout too.

I can't be arsed to pick it apart player by player, but I think you're right. Wilkins has assembled the best squad we've had since we dropped back down to this dump of a division, and I think top six next season is achievable. You're really not going to get many better up-front combo's than Forster and Murray at this level.

Looking at who's coming down this year and who's coming up (apart from the hybrid scum), the third division will in my opinion be considerably weaker next season as well. There will be some smart money on us next season.

Abort, retry, fail
dont think virgs would....he has looked very poor at Colchester....

I thought we were judging from past form (of that team) to current form (of this team)?

We are building a nice team and getting rid of some deadwood and repalcing them (with the right players) should see us as decent promotion candidates. Net season should/could be huge.

roberts - yes
virgo - yes
harding - yes
cullip (as he was then) - yes
knight - yes (as a sub at least)
iwelumo - yes (possibly ahead of murray on experience)
oatway - yes

other than that I agree we have a potentially good squad which has maybe come together just too late in the season to get us the last play off place.
Could still be close though!

Now if we could keep martot (who i like) and westlake and richards - we would walk this league next year once we get a consistent winger.

I know someone will say Murray, but if you think he would be ahead of Iwelumo and a 28-goal Leon Knight you're mad.

I quite liked Iwelumo, but there is NO WAY the 2004 Iwelumo was better than Murray.

Obviously, now we know he's quite good as he's scored goals at a higher level, Iwelumo would be a definite starter. But judging the player of 2004, he wasn't anywhere near as good.

anyone who thinks harding wouldnt get in this team needs their head examining. the fact that we have a left back on loan from ipswich who isnt him is prove enough

that team WAS better than this one. defensive wise the run up to the play off final denotes it with the amount of goals we conceded, the midfield doesnt even warrant an arguement as to which one was better, and in terms of attack i would say forster might get in ahead of iwellumo, but that would be about it

Absolute toss. Harding was an average fullback who then took a big swing towards GASH for us once he had his head turned. He was lightweight, flaky, weak, unreliable, and I would not have him back even if mayo was the only option.

Richardson is three times the player Harding ever was (and given the chance, he could be our new Watson on the dead-ball front).

if richards was three times the player that harding ever was, then it begs the question why is he out on loan to a team destined for mid table in league one, when harding has made 30 starts this season AHEAD of him in a side fighting for a play off spot in the championship?

harding was a part of THAT defence that helped us get promoted, and a solid part at that. he then got RAPED the following season by having albert jarrett stuck in front of him at the start which meant he was in effect the only player on the left side who knew what defence was

he didnt leave in the correct manner, which a lot of people seem to remember more than the contribution he made when he was here

Sorry, but I remember him as an average fullback here, and could not believe our LUCK when I saw the figures being banded about. Perhaps someone could cofirm, but I gather we were due about £800k for him according to appearances ? money for old rope.

The manner of his departure left a sour taste (not unlike Hammond), but frankly I never rated him and was far from disappointed when he left.

/QUOTE]

To be fair, he did have a couple of SHOCKERS - Millwall away for one, and there was another game at Withdean where he was done and done.

I think he was a bit average really, as good, but no better than Richards (based on Albion performances anyway).
