I agree re. probably valuing life more or perhaps expectancies have brought a sense of entitlement? - maybe given the advance of modern medicine there’s the expectancy we should all live 8 or 9 decades. In 1916, it was around 50.

Western Countries are a lot more diverse now and cosmopolitan. People on NSC have relatives in Ukraine, Israel and America among other Countries so we are a lot more vested in wars (and civil unrest) taking place on the other side of the World now even when our own forces aren’t directly involved.

If you are watching news 24hrs a day, you definitely need a day off (and this thread is not for you either).

Personally I work during the week, sleep at night and read the news twice a day for 10 minutes. But then I don’t have a TV.

I used to watch the news everyday and read the paper but stopped during Covid because I realised it was genuinely affecting my mental health. Just dip in occasionally now and all the better for it.

I’m not sure. The world has always tragically had war going on somewhere. We had a long period of European peace pre Putin but since 1945 we’ve had Korea, Suez. Vietnam, Falklands, Ireland, Afghanistan, two gulf wars and countless others. The Cold War had many periods (eg Cuban misfile crises) that I suspect felt more dangerous than the events of today.

Maybe ‘today’ feels worse simple because it is ‘today’?
Plus countless wars and civil wars, some still ongoing, across Africa.

Only going to be one winner if Israel really take on Iran.

A 1st world country with nuclear weapons and backed by the USA versus a 3rd world medieval theocracy with no nuclear weapons.
It's the poor sods who find themselves caught in the middle (Jordan and Iraq) I feel the most sympathy for, not even involved but have these two countries just firing missiles over their heads at each other.

Powerful countries with evil dictators = War

Has, and always will be.

The 'evil' bit is important here. Dictatorship alone does not always result in war mongering.
It’s news to me that there are dictatorships that aren’t evil  Do you need to repress a set number of citizens before you can be described as such? Are you in the clear as long as you don’t invade your neighbors?

Yep, I watch the headlines and then more often than not turn off as they go into detail

Good news and bad news.

Good News. There won't be a world war anytime soon.

Bad News. There won't be a world war anytime soon but only because there will need to be several civil wars fought first before any sort of consensus emerges..

Curious as to how a thread about war can have no political discussions?
Read the op again.

“Please no political discussions other than just news”. doesn’t rule out political comments just trying to avoid the drawn out political discussions around the topics indirectly that have descended into the sort of personal acrimonious binfests that has had other threads shut down.

Of course all wars are political.

How is that even possible?

As a slight aside but connected, The World at War is a series well worth watching - can probably get the box set on Amazon or somewhere. I don't know who originally said it but current events show history indeed goes in circles and humans are too stupid to learn from the past.
IMHO, pound for pound, one of the most important TV series ever made. It still beggars belief to my mind that Speer got away with everything.

By not descending into the sort of binfest/acrimonius political/religious side discussions that has now had 3 threads about Israel/ME shut down?

This thread is focussing on whether we have tipped a point of no return in terms of World conflicts and whether the World is now at a constant state of war. The news might point to that, it might not. That’s a matter of opinion that merits discussion. The news also tells us how and where things are escalating which is relevant to that.

If people want to turn it into something else up to them - it will go where it goes, but that wasn’t why I started the thread.

Thread started with explicit instructions about the content, instructions ignored because there's no way of enforcing them, someone takes it personally and has a meltdown, mod locks the thread, rinse and repeat. It's so f***ing tiresome.

So do you think the news suggests the World is now in a downward spiral state of civil and foreign conflict or not - or have you just come here to make a nuisance of yourself? 😂

Whilst I do not condone what Israel has done in Iran. The thought of Iran having nuclear weapons is frankly terrifying to me.
Are you terrified that Israel has nuclear weapons given they’ve just shredded 50,000 civilians?

And supporters of Israel are so nuts they regularly smear and threaten the owners of NSC to silence free speech. Do they sound like the good guys?
