Looney seriously looses the plot..............

If you don't want to pay the licence fee, give your TV to me, I could do with a second one for the bedroom !

Seriously though I reckon it's worth it. I've been watching BBC ' Restoration ' and discovered loads of places I never even knew existed.

At the end of the day everyone has to pay the licence fee, so the BBC has to accomodate everyones tastes and interests.

Yes there is more to life than just footy, you know...........

I agree with you on some programmes the main beef i was having concerned news and current affairs programmes.

And it doesn't cater to everyone, ie the BNP for instance.
Reference the reporters reaction when they won seats.

Does anyone remember the anti-male programmes on a few years ago, men are obselete etc etc.

Anyone remember an open debate on feminism?
Me neither.

Yeah, but since when have any political party had anything interesting to say.

Politics is a sure fire ratings loser.

I don't want to watch any kind of debate on feminism thank you very much, jeeze it's bad enough with one Germaine Greier, imagine a whole feckin' studio full of 'em.

I think even that requires a licence. They word it in such vague terms; something about 'video broadcasting and viewing equipment' to badly paraphrase them, meaning if you watch any kind of moving pictures you have to stump up.

I think you'll find that if the equipment you own does not have the tuner capability to receive TV signals, - ie dvd player, video player (not recorder), moniter - then you don't need a licence.

What I'm getting at is they are already there, in the studios, planning programmes etc.

I went along to a question time once and that was a real eye opener, its totally staged. Dimbleby doesnt ask questions at random there chosen by producers before hand.

The underlings were going to chose my question untill someone up higher vetoed it.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

The only TV i watch is mainly Sci-fi.

I'm going home.

Many of the programmes broadcast by the BBC are no longer MADE by them, but COMMISSIONED by them.

That may or may not be a good thing. But at least it makes it easier to monitor how balanced the output is. With a variety of programme providers comes the likelihood that the output will itself be balanced.

I have no objection to full-on political commitment being reflected in news and current affairs output. Let's have some left-leaning programmes AND some right-leaning programmes. Over time, everyone will benefit.

What is nauseous is a fear of political commitment. And that fear is characteristic of any broadcasting organisation that exists primarily to serve its advertisers.

The licence fee provides some protection from middle-of-the-road, uncommitted blandness.

That's certainly true for ITN. Their news programmes are tabloid TV at their worst. And as for Trevor McDonald's programmes... meretricious rubbish with little political analysis.

On the other hand, Channel 4 news is pretty good.
