Of course it isn't tone-deaf. Do you try and be controversial for the sake of it? Of course everybody knows it's a photo-op. That's what all politicians do, whatever their politics. That's the point. It's no reason for the poster to throw his toys out the pram and withdraw support from a needy food bank.

You’ll be pleased to know Labour vowed a year ago to strengthen the Hunting Act to close the loopholes which allows trail hunting under the dog hunting ban including the numerous exemptions to hunt with dogs under the legislation: Starmar is very much against repealing the ban and wants to strengthen the loopholes that allows trail hunting - he may have difficulty convincing MPs in rural constituencies but if you are anti-fox hunting as things stand, Labour is the safer Party.
The Tory leadership position has generally been against the Hunting Act and have at various times pledged to have a free vote to overturn it - in the least, there has been attempts to roll back the legislation and create further exemptions from the hunting with dogs ban in Wales and Scotland. Although Sunak himself is against overturning the ban, Teresa May pledged a free vote to overturn it under her premiership (but pulled back after a poor election result). Cameron has pledged the same in the past and is himself pro-hunting/is a hunter and is against the hunting ban but would settle on more exemptions. So far the Tories have not held a free vote for fear of losing it.
The public are still very much in support of the ban - (unaware though of the exemptions from the ban that the Tories slipped into the Act via statutory instruments - and largely unaware how ineffective the current legislation is in preventing hunting with dogs):
