Not the bike kids again ... they're crap

It was a gaffe worthy of Alan Partridge. Thinking he could not be heard, the organiser of a village carnival let everyone know what he thought of a children's motorcycle display team. Steve Broomfield branded their show "crap" as he complained, "this is so boring" into a hand-held radio. Alas, his voice was picked up by the public address system and broadcast to spectators at the fun day in the village of West End, near Southampton.

The Tigers Display Team, made up of 25 children aged from four to 14, were devastated to hear, "Oh no, they're not doing this again - get them off" booming from loudspeakers. Mr Broomfield has since resigned from the carnival committee after a ten-year stint. The Tory councillor also sent an apology to the group and vowed to make a donation to their chosen charity. Tigers chairman David Spencer said the children, who perform at events all over the South Coast, had done well.

He added: "Lots of members of the public said how good it was. The children were distraught when they heard what was said - and the parents were furious." An embarrassed Mr Broomfield blamed his outburst on frustration caused by wet weather. He added: "It was said in the heat of the moment. I vented my frustrations in the wrong place."
