When I passed my test in 1961 a gallon of petrol was 4s (20p) using the historic price calculator that equates to £3.39 today. The cheapest fuel around this area is at ASDA is £1.31 a litre and that equates to £5.83 agallon so considerably dearer pro rata.

Not quite an accurate comparison as cars today are considerably more economical.

My Dad was a Car Dealer (BMC/British Leyland  and Mazda) in the 1970's/1980's and I can remember his instructions about Ford Cortinas as part exchanges:

1.6 Litre would do around 30mpg - a good p-ex
2.0 Litre lucky to see 25mpg - only if low mileage & tidy
2.3 Litre V6 maybe 20mpg at best - no (unless we trying to get shut of an Austin Allegro or somesuch)

My 5 year old 2 litre (admittedly diesel) does 45-55mpg and if I go for the upgrade next year I'll be looking at 55-60mpg thank you very much.

God Bless German Engineers!

In the past couple of years we have gone fron a 2 car family to 1 car. my partner needs the car to run our girls to school which is to far to walk and public transport is no/no my partner also works there. I work in the middle of nowhere and silly hours shiftwork days & nights 10 miles from our house. To save money 2 years ago i outed my car & bought a honda 100cc twist & go scooter for £300 off ebay and i have used that every day since. 50mph everywhere past queing traffic.when i am feeling down about not being in a warm car in winter im soon smiling when i go and fill up with petrol and it only costs me £5 and that'll last me 3 days. Now we are looking to get a smaller engined car. Unless you have deep pockets the cost of fuel is hitting us all.

Sounds good. I'm tempted by such a scooter myself. What does it cost to tax and is insuring it comparable to being insured in a low powered car?

The price of fuel is dearer pro rata but the efficiency and fuel consumption of cars has nothing to do with the price of the fue but the makers need to sell more cars despite the price increase of fuell

Totally, as this report comparing 2.0 l cars now with those of 1980 shows. Despite comparing a big heavy 2.0l mondeo automatic estate with a 2.0l cortina half its weight the fuel spend is comparable. If they had used a diesel version it would have been much lower today than 1980.
Fuel costs have only risen slightly in real terms - March - 2011 - Which? News

Cars are much heavier now due to safety and comfort improvements. A modern car of the same power / weight ratio of a 1980 car would likely get over 80mpg.

I'm sorry that post is a bit incoherent - I never said the fuel consumption of modern cars is anything to do with the current fuel prices except for the obvious - in reality your fuel cost per mile driven is much the same as it was years ago.

I read the government are encouraging the oil company's to display the petrol prices in millilitres so they can create a feel good factor.

I dont understand the logic behind choosing to live in the country and commute into town and then complaining about fuel costs. You could live in Stoke near your work or in Manchester near your wife's and the other one could take the 40 minute train journey. Instead you and your missus drive 23,000 miles a year just to get to work. Guess what? theres a cost to that, only a part of which is paid by you. The environmental costs and the resulting congestion resulting from people commuting 23,000 miles a year is paid for by everyone else.

Life's so simple to you isn't it? Unfortunately, in this case it's somebody else's life of which you have no real knowledge or understanding - so perhaps you should have a word with the Mod's on here so you could set yourself up as NSC's resident Fortune Teller/Troubleshooter-in-chief? Well either that, or get them to change your user name to Dickhead (if it hasn't already been taken)...

Your lack of knowledge strikes yet again.

ps Could you not weave us dirty, selfish petrol heads some fuel from a length of Tofu & a small bag o' organic beans? Oh, & if you could make it 97 octane - my Kwaka will be tres obliged.

Aah. Interesting. So its actually you who havent got a clue. I drive a 2.4l turbo which does around 25mpg. However I dont bleat on a forum because.
1. I knew that when I bought it.
2 I choose to only drive it around 4,000 miles per year
3. I chose to live close to a train station so I could get to work.

Its so tricky this making informed choices stuff eh Twinkle Toes? So much easier to blame everyone else for the world being mean and unfair.

dreaming of the day i can work from home in terms of cost.

not dreaming of the day that i will be a loner at work because of it.

dreaming of the day that i will get more work done due to no disruptive colleagues.

not dreaming of the day when i will be working so close to my fridge!!!

working from home is the way forward for me! now i just need to get promoted! f*** fuel. fuel is gay! except when i need to go shopping or catch the P&R to the albion!

No longer do any pleasure driving, thankfully my work mileage rate just about pays for other trips such as shopping etc. and I have a CBR600 for pleasure riding, mind you it will be getting tucked up in the Garage until Spring very shortly.

Likewise i have my bikes that i use in going into the centre of Brighton, no way would i drive in town, but i get less mpg ( or should it be MPL now ???) out of the bike that i do out either of mine or wife cars !.

There is a myth that motorcycles are more economical.

Because the Oil Companies saw which way the wind was blowing in regards to engine technology a few years ago and, ahem, modified their pricing structure....

The govt increased the tax on diesel as it was deemed less green than petrol.
