Ridley Scott's debut film , set in the Napoleonic era; The Duellists.

Made in 1977 for virtually nothing, is visually sumptuous and has a superb cast. It is based upon a Joseph Conrad story of two French cavalry officers who duel continually (one reluctantly and the other one psychotically) over the course of the Napoleonic Wars.

I'm not going to give you the ending except neither die and one wishes he was dead...

The Duellists. One of Ridley Scott's early films (it may even be his first) and it's a mini masterpiece. It stars Harvey Keitel and Keith Carradine as the eponymous protagonists, army officers in Napoleon's army. Beautifully shot and acted: I like it more than any Scott's later, more lauded, films.
Apologies! I must read through all the Posts on a Thread...

Totally agree with your review of course plus you also didn't spoil the ending either.

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
Comrades and The Navigator.

Both very under-rated and difficult to find.
