Arsenal have just signed Ozil for £42.5m. According to Sky he topped the league with 47 assists last season in La Liga (looks like he may have been joint top with Messi). It's the most difficult and technical role but, who was/is the best at the killer pass?

47 assists? I do not believe that for a second, NO ONE an get 47 assists in one season.

Stats are from the RM website, seem to suggest 19 assists for the team in all competitions last season. Which is not to suggest that Ozil is anything other than a fabulous signing for Arsenal, because their style will suit him anyway and Wenger will be smart enough to tweak the tactics to suit him even more.
RM have previous here, notably with Makelele/Beckham:
From wikipedia (but referenced):

Club president Florentino Pérez infamously poured scorn on Makélelé's footballing abilities and proclaimed that Makélelé would not be missed:
“ We will not miss Makélelé. His technique is average, he lacks the speed and skill to take the ball past opponents, and ninety percent of his distribution either goes backwards or sideways. He wasn't a header of the ball and he rarely passed the ball more than three metres. Younger players will arrive who will cause Makélelé to be forgotten.[5] ”
His opinion differed from that of players like Zidane, who remarked the following after Makélelé was sold and Beckham was bought:[6]
“ Why put another layer of gold paint on the Bentley when you are losing the entire engine? ”
