Love her or hate her, she was the last PM that wasn't an American lapdog.....in my opinion anyway!

Didn't she apparantly say "Don't wobble George" when trying to persuade Bush the elder into a full blown invasion of Iraq during the first Gulf War??

An iron lady indeed! Should be a an interesting flick.

How can anyone " flick " one off over Thatch ? Even Dennis used a Turkey baster

Thatcher made changes to the supply side of the economy, and although there were some benefits, these were skewed to the rich. She benefited from having Labour as an unelectable mess during most of her tenure.

Union reforms are often trumpeted by her fans, and there is no doubt that these were necessary. It is a shame though that the legacy of structural reform and the oil tax revenues of her premiership was squandered on unemployment benefits and overtime for police officers.

There were two problems with industry in the 70's, unions and management, she only dealt with the first, and created the culture of greed and complacency that still exists in the latter,

I was a Manager in the early 70's. In the latter half of the 70's I gave up working for the Man and became self employed.
My take on the situation at the time was that Management were not allowed to manage by the unions, therefore there was no investment in manufacturing industry plant or infrastructure. Catch 22.
Once the Unions were broken, investment was put in R&D and plant, not to support the old industries against which a loosing battle had been fought for a long time, but new smaller specialised manufacturing.
The old industries were ultimately lost not because of the Unions but World competition from Japan initially and then every other country that could provide cheaper labour costs.
As to creating a culture of greed, to do that you have to provide peoples access to the prize. Did you not buy any BT shares or have any money in Mutual Building Societies.
At the end of the day for me the major thing to emerge from her Premiership was the standing of this country as a world player. To having a similar status that Greece has at the moment with the World Bank dictating Government Policy to a country that felt good about itself and was listened to in the World.

Two different perspectives of the same period. To quote a famous (or infamous) president, 'ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country'. Seems to me the children of Thatcher have turned that ideology upside down. And in that I mean not what you can do for your country but just what you can do for yourself.

Its the 60's generation that had it all then screwed it up for everyone else.

buy your own house, lose your job, then get it repossessed, lose your wife, kids, then ultimately your life, how many committed suicide, how many kids lost their families, how many unemployed.

one of my dearest friends committed suicide when he lost his job, house, wife, kids because he believed that buying his house made him someone and it was her that made him believe this, working class boy who even joined the tory party thinking it made him a someone.
for this I will dance when she dies
RIP Jimbo

Film: Apparently Meryl Streep has nailed the role.

Maggie: She dealt with the Unions, which needed to be done (and indeed 13 years of a Labour government never even attempted to repeal) but did turn the attitude in this country to everyone for themselves. She set the markets free which in my view indirectly lead to the problems since 2008. The selling off of council houses would have been a great idea had they been replaced but they weren't which led to the property price boom.

Almost on her own, she destroyed the North of England.

However, I blame the Labour party in the early 80s almost as much as they were a joke of an opposition and allowed her to run riot.

Perhaps some people hate her not for what she did to the individual but what she did to society, and to the less fortunate.... And there in lies the difference between those who will worship her, and those who will hate her.

Indeed. She actually believed 'there is no such thing as society' and she cared nothing for people she regarded as 'the enemy within'. Totally warped creature, mad as a box of poisonous frogs.

I grew up under her old bat wing, I can just about remember back to the way she worked..
Did it go something along the lines of,
If it doesn't make money, it's awkward to run or you think we'll better off without it. Then we'll close it, sell it, move it or maybe ban it.. A simple approach that sounds possibly the best option.
Maybe not the best option however, if that 'doesn't make money, awkward to run or that thing' she thinks we'll be better of without is your job, your world, your life...
I appreciate there were people who done well from her and her policies, but you only have to look at the mess the country is in today to see how that approach she had wasn't the best option. The country was left divided, those who were left without suffered for a long time, resulting in what we call today as 'Broken Britain'
I wish all those who done well from her, all the best.
But for me when she finally turns up her toes, I'll be celebrating with a nice bottle of milk!
