Stalin murdered literally millions of Kulaks (land owning peasants). Some died through famine but most were murdered. He then decided to murder all those who may or may not have have been a threat to him. To my mind an evil bastard.

I was n't attempting to defend Stalin merely trying to point out the difference between deliberate genocide and crass brutality.

For what it's worth I regard Stalin as murderous ultra- nationalist thug.

About Hitler not signing any "Final Solution" papers - i have just done history at gcse level, and one of our topics was on germany 1919 to 45. the studies show that even though hitler was a "great" speaker and used to "captivate audiences with his speeches" , he was infact a very weak leader, who didnt make decisions, and would spend most of his time away in the Fuhrers residences in Germany. He didnt sign papers because he mainly wasn't there.

One of the great masscres in English history took place in York in the 12th Century, when I think the figure was 300, Jews were killed in a Church in York by the local population

There is a very interesting argument that in fact a man called Martin Bormann (sp?) was the brains behing Hitles confused ramblings and was actually the more influentials of the two. It was said taht he could influenece Hitler into saying certain things and wrote all the speeches.

Hitler was also a terrible military leader and lost the war for Germany.

Good point Large One re: Ann Frank house

Went to the Dam in 1992 with a group of lads on a "cycling holiday" (well that's what I told my aunt so she would fit the bill for my 18th birthday present!!!!!!!)

Basically we spent 2 weeks on a campsite just o/s of the city getting caned everyday/nite but I made the effort to go to Ann Franks house as I'm very interested in history and was very glad I went

Very moving, and incredible to think 2 whole families lived in the attic of a factory for 3 odd years, just coming out at night but having to stay quiet throughout the day......

Has anyone else read 'Mila 18' by Leon Uris - about the Jewish Warsaw ghetto uprising of 1943? One of the most moving and inspirational books I've ever read.
Highly recommended.

Stalin did for communism what Archer did for BHAFC. The fact that the Red Army managed to defeat the Nazis having had virtually all its pre-war cadre murdered by him (that's Stalin, not Archer - I guess we can't blame Archer for genocide in Thirties Russia) is truly remarkable.

The precursor of the KGB was the NKVD.

Paulo de Canio, incidentally, is an admirer of Mussolini.

However much Mussolini did for Italy with regards to the railways, the roads and dams and other stuff there is no escaping the fact that he went to war completely unprepared and his leadership was mostly based on pictures of him prancing about on a horse trying to be macho. Thankfully he was rumbled and hang like the evil **** he was.

Funny how a lot of Italians still admire him really, that country has a serious problem with rascism probably something to do with the incredibly low levels of literacy in the south or summat.

Actually racism is more associated with the North in Italy. I work with an Italian from Calabria and he is typical of the intense regionalism of the country. He thinks all Romans are crooks, the Napolese are all gangsters and Northern Italians are racist snobs.

"The Ghetto Fights" by Marek Edelman is one of the best factual accounts I've read. Edelman was a member of the Bund (Jewish Socialist organisation), a commander of the ghetto fighters and in more recent years a Solidarity activitst.

Kholkozniks were collective farmers: they were the people, mainly former town dwellers, who took over the land after the Kulaks (rich peasants) had been expelled during the period of collectivisation.

Paolo di Canio appears quite intelligent, which makes his admiration for Mussolini
even more unacceptable. It is well documented through interviews and, I believe, mentioned in his autobiograpy.

The level of extreme right wing activity at certain Italian clubs is horrendous.
A tradition going right back to the 30s.
