A little known fact was that at its height, The Maquis, the French resistance, only numbered some 25,000 active members out of a population of about 60 million.... large areas of Nazi controlled France was largely unoccupied by German military units due to the fervent Nazism of the locals. They were enthusiastic supporters of Hitlers " Final Solution" and could be relied upon to expose any Jewish people in their local communities.. but, of course, we are not allowed to say that now in case that upsets them...

Going back to Agincourt though and history books should tell us that it was not the victory of the English archers that we have been led to believe but more to do with the merceneries (sp) who waded in with sword and axe when the French were bogged down in mud.

I was listening to Bernard Cornwall talking about his new book Agincourt (and its pronounced Azingcore) and he was saying that archers in those days had bows that needed 130 lb of pull to fire an arrow and they could get 7 off a minute. Todays bows are about 35lb pulls. they were built like brick latrines those boys. Imagine that onslaught though when there were 1000 archers firing.
The French had to wear full armour and keep their visors closed as they marched and this contributed to their slow pace and left them open to the English army.
