... are those that support the unfashionable team in an area where there is a choice of teams to support.

Examples:
Man City
Notts County
Hartlepool
Stockport
Oldham
Walsall
Brentford
Leyton O

Imagine the pressure to support Nottm Forest, particularly when they were in the top division, rather than cheer on Notts County.

And being a Hartlepool supporter when Middlesborough is just down the road.

And Leyton Orient when the Hammers are close by.

That's what being a real football supporter is all about.

If you live in Sussex there's not a whole lot of choice and supporting the Albion is a lot easier to understand.

With you most of the way on this. But I'm not sure about the inclusion of Manchester City. Historically, they are a "big club".

You've got Walsall on the list. And left off Birmingham City - the Manchester City of the West Midlands. That's a sound judgement.

Regardless of who they follow, I admire fans that truly support their team by going to many (not necessarily all) home and away matches each season.

Agree with you totally, I would add to your list the likes of Tranmere, how easy would it be to take the ferry across the Mersey and follow one of the Liverpool teams, plus the likes of Bury and Rochdale who survive in the shadow of Manchester.

The people I really admire are those who follow non-league teams, I have only been to a few games at this level, it is pretty obvious that there are a large number of supporters who only go to games this far down the pyramid, they get my vote.

In a 15 mile radius of Huddersfield there are-

Leeds, Bradford, Barnsley, Rochdale, Huddersfield, Oldham and Halifax

They all have their faithful supporters.

I used to live in liverpool, and everyone was either a liverpool fan or an everton fan, and i knew one man u supporter (who was actually just a glory hunter), but i never once met a true tranmere fan! i think they must all live on the other side of the mersey. but i can see how mush easier it would be to go to anfield or everton instead of prenton park!

Agree totally, its not who you sipport its how you support them that makes you 'die hard'.

I for example go to all home games and as many away games as i can. I can't always afford to go to all of them :(

Sammy, in my travels I have met supporters from a large percentage of league clubs but have only met two who followed Tranmere, both of them were from the Wirrel and viewed Liverpuddlians with suspicion and a degree of contempt. I might add that both of them were as passionate about their team as the majority of us on NSC and would never have considered supporting anyone other than their local team.

I think there is a big difference between being a fan and a supporter. To me a fan is someone who just looks out for results from a team, he or she probably never attends any games but swears an allegiance to a particular team, hence the general term "football fan". A supporter is someone who actually goes to games, thus making a financial contribution to their team and offering vocal support to the players, despite only attending a handful of games each season, mainly due to distance from the home ground and difficulty obtaining a ticket, I still consider myself a "Brighton supporter".

Used to go to Macclesfield with a friend who lived there and supported them, it is a town of 60, 000 within 30 miles of Liverpool, Manchester and Stoke, that's not easy!

Hove, f***ing ACTUALLY.
Spending most of my Adult life in Scotland the whole situation is magnified in Glasgow.
St Mirren is only 3 miles from Ibrox, Partick is very close as are Clyde, Morton and a few others to the Old Firm grounds.
If you walk down any street in Glasgow you will pass someone wearing some form of old firm replica merchandise.
It must be very hard growing up in Glasgow these days being a St Mirren or Partick fan !

If I widened the radius to 30 miles around Huddersfield then you have both Manchester clubs, both Sheffield clubs and Rotherham besides the 7 clubs previously mentioned

Goldstone, what the hell are you on about...
you are basically saying that all Forest fans etc etc are not true supporters based on your comment "That is what a real football supporter is all about" That is the biggest Load of Bollocks I have ever heard!

You support who you support! It doesnt matter if they are a small club or a big club!

One thing to say about Man City fans, they bought season tickets in record numbers when they dropped to Division 2. I seem to recall in the early 90s when Newcastle were shite they were getting crowds under 10,000.

Have you seen the attendances that Sheffield Wednesday are getting this season?

It's something in the region of 24000

Their season tickets sales went up too.

the fans i'd admire most are fans who go to games for the fact of going to games- like pre season , pointless ldv games etc...

Hey, calm down a minute, bhanuts.

First of all, everyone is permitted an opinion on here and if I HAD said that Forest fans were not true supporters then that would have been my view and you would be welcome to disagree.

As it happens, I did not say that Forest fans were not true supporters. What I said was, it must be tough being a Notts County supporter when there's a club down the road two or three divisions above yours. The temptation must be high to abandon your support of the "little guy" and support the best team in the area.

I respect anyone who is a football fan. Even if they support Man Ure or Crystal Palace. As long as there true fans, who have a love for football. but glory hunters I cannot stand.
