The European Union is to ban all football chants and imprison anyone who sings them, several tabloids are likely to report hysterically tomorrow. According to a new EU directive, many of the chants currently sung in football grounds across the country are "at best offensive, at worst racist".
Friedrich von Mullet, the European Commissioner for watching sport, has called for football clubs to rephrase many of the chants used by their fans to support them, and come down heavily on those who step out of line. One of the first chants to go, Mr Mullet said, could be the different versions of "Come on England/Leeds/Arsenal etc".
"This chant is blatantly discriminatory against players on the opposing side," he explained. "We should be encouraging players from both sides to work together for a better game of football, perhaps through mediation or group brainstorming. I see no reason why we should criticise players' efforts just because they are wearing the wrong coloured shirt: in my book that's counter-productive."
Others chants to go could be those criticising the referee, the linesmen and the opposing team's manager for being mistaken in their decisions, overweight or in some way unhappy.
However, detractors say any new regulations on football chants would be "political correctness gone mad". Douglas Ramsbotttom, spokesman for the Milwall supporters' club, told DeadBrain in a serious and reasoned discussion, "We are not f****** racists and we don't say nuthin' that would offend any f*****. Those German t**** can take their regulations and shove them up their c****!"
