Just far enough away from LDC
I think the consensus is Alastair Campbell is a scheming manipulative bully and the Daily Mail is a hypocritical rag.

Can't disagree much with that although info have a grudging admiration of Campbell. Where he and Mandelson were so effective was that they had a strategy which they then spun the help out of. This current government don't have a similar strategy so all the spin seems a bit empty. also Adam Boulton (no friend of Campbell's) did defend him in the light of the McBride revelations by saying that Campbell never briefed against his own party, or on personal issues of the opposition.

No, you're not getting it. You're missing it by a mile.

In the Mirror piece, the paper isn't smearing Maggie's memory, their story is about they're talking about other people smearing Maggie's memory - they're reporting a news story. What is the Mirror doing wrong in reporting the news?

In this instance, The Mail is reporting -ACCORDING TO THE MILLIBAND FAMILY - a pack of lies, smearing Miliband Snr's memory.

To compare those two has nothing to do with 'left' and 'right'. If you're going to compare them, compare them on their truthfulness and their relevance to the facts.
Double standards here, (BTW I do get it) The left are rejoicing at the death of a frail old lady and it is reported in the lefts voicepiece the Mirror.
The Mail report on Ralph Milliband being a marxist who hated all that Britain stood for and gave Milliband the right to reply which he did and his reply was printed alongside the article. Of course the Milliband family are going to defend their father, but the Mail has repeated their claims and asked for proof that their claim are lies...so far no one but the lefts spin doctors have stepped up,but haven't come up with any proof.
I might be out of the 'In' party by being on the right...but it was Union power and their policies that put me there.

There's no double standards here, and you're still not getting it.

The Mirror is reporting that people were rejoicing at Maggie's death - and you're saying the Mirror shouldn't have reported it. Why not? The Mail and the Express reported it - were they wrong to do so as well?

The Mail report on Ralph Milliband being a marxist who hated all that Britain stood for and gave Milliband the right to reply which he did and his reply was printed alongside the article. Of course the Milliband family are going to defend their father, but the Mail has repeated their claims and asked for proof that their claim are lies...so far no one but the lefts spin doctors have stepped up,but haven't come up with any proof.

The Milibands (and others) have countered that the story is full of lies, providing evidence of his military service, so how about the Mail justify its spurious claim? The rantings of an adolescent seem to be prove enough for them, which is exceptionally flimsy. The fact he didn't change his political ideology doesn't mean he didn't love Britain. The Mail is putting two and two together and coming up with its own answer, which is not uncommon for it to pull.

The Mail repeating its claim (using 3/4 of the spread by which they allowed Miliband a right of reply) doesn't add extra weight to its argument.

They comment on Ralph Miliaband not adhering to British values, but then, I don't adhere to the Mail's take on British values either; I'm not that spiteful and hate-filled. Does that mean I hate Britain?

I might be out of the 'In' party by being on the right...but it was Union power and their policies that put me there.

I have no idea what 'being out of the 'In' Party' means.

The Daily Mail loves Britain so much that its parent company Rothermere Continuation Ltd is registered in Bermuda.

With respect, you really do not get it. The Thatcher death celebrations were news reported in all the media, not just the Mirror. Look, here's the Mail's version:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...-Lefts-sick-celebration-Brixtons-streets.html

It has got nothing to do with left and / or right; the news is the news no matter how unsavoury might find it.

The Mail piece was not news. Reporting a teenager's diary entries from half a century ago and trying to link them to the writer's son is ludicrous. Whatever his father's thoughts on social democracy, Ed Milliband is clearly of a different opininon or he wouldn't be an MP now.

Did you really write that?

Incredibly blinkered comment there. The Milibands (and others) have countered that the story is full of lies, so how about the Mail justify its spurious claim? No you probably do not hate Britain...you hate the Mail...because I don't hold your views of the Left I'm blinkered according to you.
You say that the Mail are putting out spurious claims...then by all means step up and prove they're wrong.
It's simple really you hate the Mail and it's take on life...I dislike the Mirror and it's look at life, both report the same story from different angles and give their take depending on their political viewpoint.
Both papers are being sold so it's your choice to pick which paper you buy.
It seems you buy both because you quote the Mails page on Millibands reply as a 3/4 spread...amazingly accurate...so you read the article in the Mail then.

Exactly, or to put it another way, the Mirror (as did other papers) reported events whereas in the case of R Milliband, the Mail are expressing their opinion (in an attempt to tarr Ed Milliband with the same brush).

Just where in my post did I say the Mirror should NOT have reported it! They have every right to print it it's just that it's alright to report it but because it's the left...but then Left go into a hissy fit over the report on Ralph Milliband.

Why was it ludicrous...was Ralph Millibands diary all lies...they reported his diary...does'nt matter when they were written,he was a Marxist...even Ed said that... and he did hate Britains role in the world...so far nobody has come up with proof that the Mail is lying.

I hate this government, I hate our foreign policy, I hated our involvement in Iraq...if I kept a diary, is this going to mean 'I hated Britain' after I'm dead and can't speak for myself? Will I have a picture of my gravestone with the witty tasteful pun 'grave socialist'!? It's absolute b*llocks that you can state someone hates a country because of an objective political standpoint. The Mail is lying because they're drawing a conclusion based on an inference that can't be countered by the man himself. Even one of Thatcher's cabinet ministers, taught by Milliband is saying it is a load of rubbish it is - http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2013/oct/02/thatcher-ally-daily-mail-ralph-miliband-lies, as are most other people that knew and respected the man. Even the Telegraph's obituary in 1994 was admiringly respectful - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/politics-obituaries/10347055/Professor-Ralph-Miliband.html

Proof that the Mail is lying - they're smearing a person who is now dead, you really need to smash your head against a wall to see if you can knock some common sense into it.

Having watched the Newsnight thing with Campbell, and having read the article and having read a number of things about it, I think the onus is on the Daily Mail to justify its stance. But the premise of the original article was so flimsy and fatuous that it is looking ludicrous in doing so. Francis Maude - arch Tory strategist - said last night that the Mail has done itself some damage in this matter, both David Cameron and Nick Clegg have supported Ed Miliband.

Given that much of this is based on something he wrote when he was 17, how many people still hold all the vies they held at that age when they are 27. let alone 47 or 67. There was plenty of stuff in the Guardian yesterday, for example, about how he recognised in later life that democracy suffered under socialism, and he recognised that western systems of government were more likely to be fair. He was an academic - by definition, therefore, clever, able to think and develop his views and his standpoint.

The Daily Mail seems very isolated at the moment, mainly because the vast majority of people recognise that it has been spouting spurious and vindictive fabricated nonsense..

Lazy answer...Quite easy to post a facepalm...how about you showing me the post where I said the Mirror should've NOT have published it.

Not lazy, just exasperated. It's been explained to you in numerous posts about the difference between reporting facts and expressing opinion but you don't get it. Nobody has said you posted that the Mirror should not have reported those events.

I was just off to look for those links. Thanks for saving me the bother. The Telegraph obituary is particularly enlightening. He would not have been on great demand as a speaker in the USA had he been a rabid communist.

I've read that emboldened bit several times now, and it still makes absolutely no sense. You couldn't clarify in a manner which doesn't over-simplify your world of politics as being merely 'left' and 'right'...?

If I read you correctly, you're saying that the 'left' (your token stock phrase - as if it is a one-size-fits-all phrase) is having a hissy-fit over some inaccurate reporting, but that it's hypocritical for the 'left' to whine about it because some people were cheering Maggie's death? Have I got that correct?

In amongst all the jokey blokey stuff on NSC, there are some seriously smart people hanging out here. Some excellent and valid points from both sides of the argument and on the whole a very grown up discussion I think.

Cue ten pages of utter shite and drivel, to follow.

You don't get the difference between reporting events in the country, which happened after Thatcher died, and a character assassination of a dead man based on his diary at the age of 17.
