Can't be bothered clicking on the link, but this IS The Holy Grail we're talking about here. The very same paper that Adolf Hitler forbade the SS from reading for fear of stirring up extremist tendancies.

It's certainly well written...I women in her 30's or 60's...

(but definitely not 40's or 50's...)

...the weapon is either a machete, a sword (ok easily mistaken) or a spade!?!? A friggin spade, I think I could tell the difference between a spade or a sword from 200 yards! It must have been one friggin sharp spade!

Luckily the reporting has taken the sting out of the horror of it for me!

Typical BBC missing the detail. They've said nothing about a potential spade being used...

In fairness to the Daily Mail (much as I hate it), they are only going on what they've been told. If a group of 200 people witness something, particularly if it's something traumatic, you will get 200 very different accounts of it. Numerous experiments have been conducted whereby people are shown a scenario unfolding in front of them, and they've all been asked to write down what they saw afterwards. It's ridiculous how different their accounts end up being. The human brain kind of shuts itself down to an extent when exposed to trauma. Certain senses are heightened and certain ones narrowed, to the extent where tunnel vision sets in. It also tends to fill in gaps where the actual information isn't available, either from the imagination, or from other sources. In the case today, plenty of the witnesses might describe the attacker as being covered in blood, when actually not all of them would have physically seen that. Their brains are telling them that, because he allegedly cut someone's head off, he MUST be covered in blood.

I've seen loads of reports at work where a call has come in reporting (say) a man with a knife in the street. By the time loads of other calls have come in, sometimes you're not even sure they're talking about the same incident. It ends up being described as a machete, an iron bar, a sword, a dagger, and probably even a gun after you've read a couple of pages.
