Expensive, quality, up-market chinese restaurant or so I thought. According the Southern FM this morning, inspectors found filthy kitchens with cockroaches and fined them £14,000!

Does anyone have a view on this or am I the only one surprised?

Went there once and it was outrageously expensive, but the food is hardly any better than many other chinese meals (or takeaways) that I've had, so I've never bothered with the place since. Gars or Sun bo Seng in the Lanes are cheaper, and better.

Any restaurant which is fined due to poor hygiene in its kitchens should have to display that fact on a poster in the window, right next to the menu.

It should be like an MOT for the restaurant. Health inspectors to visit unannounced at least once a year, and if all is satisfactory, they issue an official certificate of hygiene which the restaurant MUST display in its window. If the restaurant is found to be unsatisfactory, then a Notice of Default must be displayed in the window until it is rectified.

That would soon make those grubby bastards get their act together for their paying customers.

Yeah, it was one of myself and Mrs Brovian's favorite restaurants, but like Dannyboyseagull I won't be going there again.

Easy - I'd love the names of takeaways that do Chinese food of the Garden's (apparent) standard. That isn't a sarcastic dig BTW, I genuinely want to know. All the Chinese takeaways I know in this country are uniformly awful, hence the reason I liked CG.

I don't get why people ever venrure down preston st for dinner unless it's to dig in the ribs. I thought that it was common knowledge that standards of cleanliness, staffing and food was pretty low because they don't have to try anymore now that people flock there for some reason.

An NSC regular who shall remain nameless once found himself stumbling into an illicit gambling den underneath that part of Preston Street whilst trying to locate the gents in a club - in Regency Square...Old smugglers tunnels under the road, you don't get things like that in Reading.

Happens at the very best places ...

I worked for a college vacation at Goodwood many years ago and the state of the kitchens there made me retch!

One guy returned a steak while I was there because it was tough. The chef spat on it, trod on it, then brushed it down with his sweaty hand before hammering it on the board and returning it to the plate!!!

yeeuuk

The one I keep going back to - and its not particularly glamerous - is the Mile Oak Fisheries one (yes, its a chippy as well). I've never been disappointed with anything from there, and I am a fussy bugger when it comes to chinese. Too many of them are completely flavourless, with the food tasting kind of "washed out", but that Mile Oak one for some reason seems to be a welcome exception.

Maybe I'm being harsh on CG as I've only ever eaten there once and it wasn't a deeply unpleasant experience. But I remember my meal being pretty bland, and for the prices they charge I was expecting far better.

There were rumours about 20 years ago that cats and dogs were going missing from the streets of Brighton and ending up in chinese food. I remember China Garden being mentioned, Lin Hong takeaway in Beaconsfield Road and Nanking Restaurant in East Street (the latter 2 no longer exist).

Cheers Easy. I actually don't particularly like Chinese food, but Mrs Brovian loves it. Every time we get a takeaway it always seems to me to be bland and greasy - and we've tried a fair few.

From reading empire and Chapper's posts am I the only one who didn't realise I was eating crispy aromatic Alsatian, and battered rat droppings?

Gars is very good, but if there's a better Chinese restaurant anywhere than "Good Friends" in Preston Street, I've never found it.

The number of Chinese people in there says it all - in fact, I'm almost loathe to mention it here in case it becomes TOO popular!

But as you're all Albion fans.......

Easy...I agree that one in Valley Road is nice, as is the one opposite the Mile Oak pub.

The daughter is in Mrs Dave the Gaffer's class at MOCP and the dad brings in assorted Chinese goodies for the kids. Top Banana

Nice touch.
Its the one opposite the Mile Oak pub that I was referring too, although the Valley Rd one is pretty good as well. That Mile Oak one though...the chicken and cashew nuts in mandarin sauce, with spicey singapore noodles and prawn sesame toast is an absolute BANQUET. I'm getting midly aroused just thinking about it.
