Understand that we have to take the courtesy buses back from the stadium (unless booked on the tour coaches) but do we really have to take these to the stadium? Where we are staying it’s a direct bus and a little over 18 minutes!!

Indeed. Our accommodation for the Thursday night is right by Termini, to be handy for the coach drop off after the game. Because we’ll be there 2ish dropping our bags off, we may walk to the coach collection point. If we do, it will be to get a really early one though. Equally, we might, like you’ve suggested, just walk to the stadium (Early, in daylight!)
