Leyton Orient v Brighton from April 1979 - three former Tottenham favourites on show. Ralph Coates for the O's, and Martin Chivers and Ian Moores for Brighton.

Sky Plus duly set

This one has been on before and if you haven't seen it you really should set the recording device of your choice to enjoy over and over again the wonder that is Ralph Coates' comb over.

At one point when he runs down the wing, the hair rises to a vertical position to demonstrate both how bald he really is and also how much hair he has had to grow to create such a comb over.

I am sure I was at that game. Would Vince Hilaire of been playing for Orient?

No idea. I would have been 7 at the time, more into my Lego back then than football.

I went on the Seagull Special train to Leyton Midland Road. You had to walk down the alley between terraced houses to get to the away turnstiles. One of the memorable games on our run to the top tier. We must have had half the crowd.

Was there. We were on the promotion run in but don't think it was quite nailed on and Orient gave us a decent game.

The famous final game at Newcastle where we won 3-1 to seal promotion to the old First Division must have been only a few weeks later.

I can remember seeing Martin Chivers play for Spurs and England a few years earlier and never thought he'd be in an Albion shirt. Was a bit past his best but still did a useful short term job for his old mate Mullery.

Observations:

1. Coates's hair was absolutely HILARIOUS.
2. Brian Moore said the Orient crowd of "just 11,000 was disappointing"
3. The Orient dugouts were the size of broom cupboards. Mullary, Yaxley, Ward and some other bloke in there were practically sitting on top of each other, and were sharing the same blanket over their knees. Good job it was only 1 sub and not 7 in those days.
4. Martin Chivers's beard was HEROIC.
5. Speaking about the Coates goal, Chivers said "he'll be going out and buying himself a video recorder for that one".
6. 2nd division Orient v Brighton was the feature game of the programme, and was on BEFORE the Liverpool v Arsenal highlights.
7. Lawrenson was a diver.

Cracking show.
