If you look at beerintheevening though there seems to have been some controversy over some reviews. People never reviewing before or since and happening to big up the pub etc. Surely not a fit up?!

Given that they praise the staff for their friendliness (?) I think almost certainly!

Good point, well made.

Perhaps you need to lead a campaign for the Coopers? ???

Star now down to 7th. The Harp on the Strand top. Oak 4th.

The CASK (a new pub in Pimlico) had been top for two months before the Star usurped them on Friday, and they are now down to 27TH!!!! Heckie.

Clearly it doesn't take a lot to change the ratings (most are only rated by 50 or so people and there can be up to 50 pubs on the same decimal point, so I guess it just takes one person's 8/9 rating or one 5/6 rating to cause a big jump/drop). Also most people on the interweb give negative reviews - the Star went top as others got bad ratings: There were four pubs on 7.6, the other three dropped to 7.5, leaving the Star on top, now everyone is 7.5 or less! So basically it's people giving bad - not good - reviews that is changing the table! Give it a year and no pub will even be 7 out of 10!

I'm starting to largely distrust the beerintheevening charts.

The Star is back at the top, having fallen to seventh last night, yet only six extra people have rated it (293 up from 287) since they first went top on Friday - surely that small number can't have such a huge up-down influence on the average score.

All the Sussex pubs are up today, Nelson have made the top ten, now 8th (previously 17th). Basketmakers are up seven at 13th. Stand-Up up six at 85th.

Good to see the Britons Protection in Manchester break into the charts (albeit at 97th) - best whiskey pub in Britain. FACT.

i refuse to believe anyone can vote the Royal Oak as the best pub when there are half a dozen better pubs within 10 minutes walk. the service in the Wetherspoons at Elphant and Castle is better ffs. definate fit ups going on i reckon.

So lets deal in stereotypes, shall we?
And yours are from the 1980s, mate.
The only difference between real ale and lager drinkers is we don't wake up with a raging hangover the next day:)
I drink real ale but I must admit that the comments by THPP, Herr Tubthumper and others about the Star and it's clientele are spot on. Great place if you want to meet other (male) lard-arses and discuss the pint of Grumbleweed you had at the Barnham Real Ale and Steam Traction fayre - but not TOO good for anything else. Plus it's too small and I'm not a huge fan of Dark Star beers. Bit gimmicky.

The Swan at Falmer is an infinitely superior pub in all respects. Seriously.

Hmmm, I've now worked out why it varies so much, many of them have very few ratings so it just takes one vote to change things. Just gave my favourite pub on there - Coach & Horses Norwich - a 9 rating, which sent it from 92nd to 24th!

The Evening Star used to be an unpretentious little pub that was well OK.
Now it is run by Dark Star (one of the Managers is from Bromley, CP reject) and now it is to be avoided at all costs. It is brain damage. WARNING!

Absolute bollocks!

The landlord Matt has been the landlord there for ten years and he's from Portsmouth!

That just shows what a load of bolloxs that poll is as most decent pubs will have more than that number as regulars but they wouldnt be computer nerds who would vote for it.

He's a trained investigator you know?!?

With my own investigatative skills and given these two quotes, I deduce that Mr Mondays & Stinkers may well have been in the house at the time of the second reviewer's visit:

"Visited many times and always had a great time. Friendly staff and customers along with excellent beer"

and

"Decor rather harsh, landlord a bit stand-offish and clientele very cliquey. Need to be a local to feel comfortable here and the decent beer does not make up for that"

It's a great pub and I echo the sentiment

So do I but you have to have your own transport to get there, so someone has to draw the short straw. The roads in that area are lethal for over-enthusiastic drivers.

There's also a nice real-ale pub in the centre of Swanage itself - can't remember the name - and that avoids the driving problem.

I've only been in the Evening Star once and once was enough. It was full of discusting hideous people. It was a really unpleasant experience. If I did not know any better I would have thought I had stumbled upon a secret meeting of peodos and sex pests. Why does everyone who drinks real ale have to be so unpleasant looking and carry a carrier bag?
Must admit I once saw a sex-pest former Brighton Councillor - and public Albion fan - "trawling" through the "Star" one Saturday afternoon.

Everyone looked at him like he was a piece of dog-shit and he trawled ass out again.

Since they knocked it down,it's been the Maytree on the Old Shoreham Road in Hove.If the Hangleton should get similar treatment,it would be hard to judge.
