Frequently I read that GP should be doing better because its the "best Brighton squad ever".
What is it that makes you sure of this?
Is it the way they are playing? If that is the case, should a) the manager get credit for it or b) if you are in the 'only points matter' camp been proven wrong by now?
Or is it based on merit?
Interesting in that case. CH's vs Potter's squads:
Keeper
Mathew Ryan - signed from Spanish top team Valencia where he played 23 games
vs
Rob Sanchez - academy player most recently in Rochdale
Left back
Gaetan Bong - 5+ seasons in French Ligue 1
Bernardo - 40 games in Bundesliga
vs
Solly March - difficult comparison as he was in CH's squad as well
Dan Burn - aside for nine PL games in Fulham, always in Championship/League One
Central defenders
Lewis Dunk - Lewis Dunk
Shane Duffy - five games in Everton, other than that a Championship player
Leon Balogun - multiple seasons in Bundesliga
vs
Lewis Dunk - Lewis Dunk
Adam Webster - Championship player
Ben White - academy player with one season in the Championship
Right backs
Bruno - CL/EL experienced La Liga player from Spanish top team Valencia
Martin Montoya - 60+ appearances for Barcelona, 60+ appearances for Valencia
vs
Tariq Lamptey - Chelsea academy player with one senior appearance prior to joining Brighton
Joel Veltman - Ajax cb/rb, Dutch international and buckets of CL experience
Central/defensive midfielders
Yves & Davy - still around
Dale Stephens - experienced Championship midfielder
Beram Kayal - Celtic player with 30+ appearances in EL/CL
vs
Yves & Davy - still around
Steven Alzate - academy player
Adam Lallana - 200+ PL games, former England international
Wingers / attacking midfielders
Pascal & Ali - still around
Anthony Knockaert - former France U21 and Championship player
Jose Izquierdo - EL experienced Player of the Year in Belgium (28 apps / 14 goals in his last season)
vs
Pascal & Ali - still around
Leandro Trossard - Belgian league player (32 apps / 5 goals in his last season)
Alexis Mac Allister - ca 50 appearances in the Argentinian league
Strikers
Glenn Murray - Championship player (142 games / 67 goals)
Florin Andone - 3 seasons in Spanish La Liga
Jurgen Locadia - Eredivisie player, 30+ appearances in EL/CL
Tomer Hemed - 3 seasons in Spanish La Liga
vs
Neal Maupay - Championship player (85 games / 37 goals)
Aaron Connolly - academy player
Danny Welbeck - former English international, Man United/Arsenal player etc.
Andi Zeqiri - Swiss div 2 player
If you say the current squad is the better one based on merits, how is that? Is it because of Lallana & Welbeck? Well, I hate to break it to you but these guys have hardly been shining for the last couple of years and looks like they will be unavailable more often than not.
So if it isnt player performances / player skill (according to a lot, they are poorly coached logically meaning they are not performing well and not improving their skills) and if it isnt what they've proven in the past (CH's team had more experience and more merits in the bag)... what is it then that makes you expect this Brighton side to perform a lot better than the one from previous PL seasons?
