So did one of your favourite groups disband just at the right time or go on for one album too many.

Considering only the last official studio albums released, two extremes:

The Jam - The Gift or The Clash - Cut the Crap.

For me once Mick Jones left/sacked the Clash should of stopped there. interestingly their last album was overlooked for the Sound System box set.

Whereas the Gift is still the Jam on or near top form.

Horsham
The Stone Roses - Second Coming?

Personally I don't mind it althought it is of course nowhere near the first album.

One for the music history pendants to debate.......... "Abbey Road" good, "Let It Be", anticlimactic.

Talking Heads should have just released "Blind" as a single rather than their last 2 lps

Although strangely the last two albums were their highest placed albums in the UK album charts. However on Naked in addition to Blind, I do like Mr Jones and (Nothing but) Flowers. True stories has Love for sale and wild wild life, so maybe a EPs worth. Don't play either album as much as the first 6

In Utero by Nirvana was nowhere as good as Nevermind.

However, I hope that was not part of the decision for Kurt Cobain to blow his head off.
