The Atkins diet is a pain. We had a small garden party a few weeks back and two people were on it. There was heaps of food but I had to go and rustle up some stuff for one guest who hadn't eaten for eight hours because everything had carbs in it.
Of course, it bloody had, I'm a veggie - no-one else was complaining though.

Atkins and vegetariansim don't mix

I'm highly suspicious of anything that means it's OK to eat fry-ups but not boiled rice. The whole notion of a "diet" is flawed anyway. What happened to eating a balanced diet, drinking in moderation and exercising regularly? Can't say I do any of these (as my body will testify) but I'd never touch the Atkins if I was looking to get into shape.

I did it for 2 weeks a while back. Gets bloody boring after 3 days, but it did work. Lost nearly a 12lbs.

I'm currently on it... it works, and I feel great.

I've been doing it for 4 weeks now, and I've lost about 18lbs. I've had no adverse affects.

It's easier for me, because I like a lot of low carb foods anyway, and the canteen at work does a lovely bacon and egg brekkie every morning.

I spent about a month doing research before I took the plunge, having read 3 books as well as a number of pro and con websites, and decides that any perceived / rumoured down sides were worth the risk, as I am not intending on staying on it forever.

I started at 15st 6lbs (fat b'stard), and I'm now 14st 2lbs. My target weight is 13st 10lbs, so I'm not far off.

When I hit my target I'll switch to a more balanced diet, and increased exercise to stabilise my weight there.

From the start the diet i've been on has consisted of the following:

Breakfast : 4 rashers of bacon & scrambled egg

Lunch: either roast chicken salad & roast lamb or bacon / ham omelette & ham/beef salad.

Evening Meal: One of: Pork Chops (3) and 2 fried eggs, cajun chicken breasts (2) and salad, 100% beek burgers (3 or 4) and fried eggs, beef chilli, homemade curry (no rice) with spicy aubergine 'popadoms', steak & egg, Fish (any kind).

Snacks: Pepperami, smoked mackerel.

Drinks: Dry white wine (1g carb per glass), red wine (1.5g carb), Gin and slimline tonic (zero carbs).

you can't eat any fruit in the first 2 weeks, as they contain high levels of fructose.

In the last week I've started to re-introduce carbs into my diet, with some rice with a lovely curry the other night, and some pasta with bolognese. I've also started to eat some fruit each day, mainly strawberries, raspberries, plums or a single orange. The aim of raising the carb levels (above the 20g per day limit) is to find the balance point where weight loss stops, after which you can work off that value.

I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone, as I'm not qualified to make such a call, but it has worked spectacularly for me. I've seen a real loss in body fat, none of this muscle wasting they have been going on about. My face is slimmer, I can wear throusers I last wore a few years ago, and I'm going to have to but some smaller belts.

I have been on Atkins and I lost a stone after about 3 weeks. I had no strange side effects and enjoyed the food I was allowed to eat.

I would recommend it to anyone (except veggie freaks!)

I'm on a version of the atkins diet which i find most agreeable. You eat all the stuff the atkins diet allows plus chips, bread, pasta and other stuff as well as DOING SOME f***ing EXERCISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, well, it was a valliant attempt.

As I said, when I come off the Atkins, I'm going for a more balanced diet, with increased exercise.

However, could 'your' diet get rid of nearly 1lb per day over a 3 week period ?

Papa:clap:

Aimed at me, I'm sure.

I believe there are veggie versions of Atkins - not for me though.

I've lost weight steadily over the past couple of months (was nearly 15st, now 12st 9lb) - still drunk beer when I've wanted it, eaten curry (with rice), chips, pizza, pasta and evil bread and potatoes when I've wanted it too. Just done it in moderation and gone down the gym a little more than I was. Not difficult, because I was not really going down there at all before!

I'm sure Atkins does work - there are enough people who testify to it, but if you don't make the post-Atkins lifestyle changes that P.L. has mentioned I imagine most will put back on what they took off. Typical dieting yo-yo effect.

Falmer, soon...
The basic premise of the Atkins diet is simple.

To get energy, your body sources Carbohydrate first, then fat, then protein.

If you don't eat carbs, the body burns fat.

Personally I don't think it's any way to eat, particularly if you enjoy your food.

However, there is some sense in having a low fat, high protein, low carb diet.

if you've been on the atkins diet then as soon as you stop (or even go near a pasta shell) you put on tonnes. Anybody on it then enjoy it whilst it lasts. You'll be fatter than ever in 6 months time unless you (as Everest says he will) take some simple (but effort taking) measures.
