I thought both France at the US had been missed completely, yet it turns out they're both there. I'll get my coat.

US is ranked 11 and yet what is surprising:

"Census figures released in September 2013 confirm that record-high numbers of Americans are living in poverty. The latest data reveal:

One out of seven people in the USA are living in poverty.

In 2012, 46.5 million people were living in poverty in the United States—the largest number in the 54 years the Census has measured poverty.

The poverty rate (the percentage of all people in the United States who were poor) also remained at high levels: 15% for all Americans and 21.8% for children under age 18.

The United States Bureau of the Census measures poverty by comparing household income to the poverty threshold for a household of a given size. The poverty threshold is adjusted each year to take account of changes in the cost-of-living. The poverty threshold is not, however, representative of what a family actually needs for a decent living. For example, in 2012, the weighted average poverty threshold for a household of four was only $23,492.

Almost one out of sixteen people in the USA are living in deep poverty.

People with income 50% below the poverty line are commonly referred to as living in deep poverty; Census figures show that, in 2012, 6.6% of our population, or 20.4 million people, were living in deep poverty."

When I went through I saw France, but not the US - I saw 12th and 10th, so clicked back to find 11th and it wasn't there. I wondered if it was the US, in hiding.

Not convinced by the absence of the US and France, nor by the inclusion of Malta.

The thread stated:
most crime free countries to live in

US is surely very high risk for crime and the French are always protesting abut something.

Whereas here in Malta it is safe to walk the streets at night. Crime rates are very low. Very laid back unless you have to drive anywhere.

Yes that Yahoo list does manage to miss out USA at 11 and to include Switzerland's 2nd place twice, but in the original full list USA is there along with the whole rankings down to 142 - central African republic.

Some interesting results, Greece still makes the top 50 despite its economy, personal freedom and social capital all being outside the top 100. Russia is down at 58 despite having 29th best education only a little behind UK's poor showing of 25 for education. Russia is let down by Governance (108) and personal freedom (111)- who would'a thunk it?

At the bottom of the list, there are two countries worse than Syria for safety and security, but these are Democratic Congo and Afghanistan so not massive shocks. Yemen, Sudan and Egypt all worse than Syria for personal freedom, which is going some. OK two of those no great surprise but shows the extent of the reverses in Egypt since the "Arab Spring".

That's a no then. Blame the migrants

If you say so - you clearly know more than anyone living there. I'm meeting someone from Geneva tomorrow, I'll tell her she's imagining the increase in street beggars, drug addicts and petty criminals she spoke about last time we met. The police have been expanded in the last 2-3 years to deal with it and are apparently getting rates down a bit but people living in Geneva will tell you it's very different from a few years ago

for what its worth,my brother and his friends(who live in Switzerland) all say there has been a significant rise in crime from immigrants over the past few years.

This article would also appear to back up their observations.

in places im sure the US is scary, but in many, probably most, its not. its a vast country, and population similar to all of western europe, its a bit daft to compare it in many ways. but then the same applies with most the countries in europe, many safe quite happy an healthy areas of UK, and some shithole with poor health. comparing Singapore to say Sweden or Canada is all a bit wierd as they are just so different. Ireland is an interesting one so high up, as iirc there's more than half the population of Irish born people live abroad, hardly a vore of confidence and happines.

I never said crime wasn't rising, I was asking for a source and you told me 'my mate said'. That wasn't a source.

You could say the same about NZ, which is even higher up the rankings. And yet, I was told by a Kiwi, there are more New Zealanders living abroad than live in NZ. Whether that's true or not, there are an awful lot of expatriates. If the place is so great, why?

i found out today that the police had arrested the guy who murdered 3 taxi drivers last year. I had no clue that 3 taxi drivers had been murdered. Most of the serious crime is between the mafias, of which there are quite a few, and their crimes do not seem to deserve much airtime on the news. High ranking public officials, and politicians seem to make the news quite a lot Some very high ranking politicians are currently in jail. Have been several major corruption scandals (in a country where you can bribe the police).
Most noticeable crime is pickpockets.
Having said that, some of the best beer in the world is a quid for half a litre. Could help the happy feeling.

Once I'd read that article, and clicked on the link 'On the beat with the Geneva Police', started to lose any faith in it's balance - The photo story essentially paints any dark and/or foreign people as dirty/suspicious/dangerous and white swiss as wholesome and good:-

"Officers check the identity of a young man from Saudi Arabia who was driving his convertible Bentley too fast on the Mont-Blanc bridge and will receive a fine for speeding"

"An officer asks a drunk Guinean man to go home"

"The belongings of an Albanian man arrested for selling drugs: a watch, a lighter, an Albanian identity card with a photo, Euro and Swiss franc banknotes and an Albanian passport"

"An officer searches a man from North Africa near the "Batiment des Forces Motrices" concert hall who was arrested for selling drugs in the street"

"Officers escort two handcuffed illegal immigrants arrested for squatting inside a derelict building" (Terrible crime)

"Two Guinean men arrested for selling drugs wait for officers to scan their fingerprints"

"A North African arrested for car-jacking recovers after receiving pepper spray in his face"

"A Guinean is held after being injured during a fight with another African; he is later released after refusing medical assistance (l), an interrogation cell is closed for cleaning and disinfection (r)" Particularly enjoyed the 'disinfection' reference'

"Officers search for squatters, usually illegal migrants sleeping inside empty buildings" And so on and so on, but:-

"Dinner time during the night shift: spaghetti bolognese, soft drinks and water" - When picturing 7 local white policemen
