So sorry for your loss.

Such a lovely post. As a parent my takeaway is that whether it's football, fishing or stamp collecting, putting time aside to share or cultivate your child's passion will stay with them for life. If my children can experience half the love and memories you've had with your Dad it will all be worthwhile.

My huge condolences @Kosh

My dad passed away June 2024 and I still think of him all the time. He wasn’t a football fan but arranged for friends of his who were to take me to the Goldstone. What he did pass on was a lifelong love of music, for which I can’t thank him enough.

I’ve taken my son since he was 8. He’s now old enough to drink legally. There’s no doubt it’s brought us together very closely. I do wish he’d hurry up and start earning his own money though

Thanks to you all - some lovely posts, shared memories in amongst the grief.

Given dads journey I’ve opted to have some counselling, and I wanted to put this out there to everyone - there is no shame in it, when you lose someone you love no matter their age, it’s good to talk it through… although I accept it won’t be for everyone.

As part of dads funeral I told our Albion story whilst delivering my part of the eulogy… people were laughing and crying, especially about the time we set off to Doncaster, after I told dad that’s where we were playing (way before smart phones I might add) only to discover via Radio 5, that we were actually away at Wigan… this when we were nearly at Donnie… most dads would have quite rightly just said that’s it… ! it’s back home we go… or perhaps to the Lane… but no we diverted and made it just after KO to watch Wigan go 1-0 up and witness an Ashley Neale ‘masterclass’ … Roberto Martinez was playing for Wigan that day…

Great memories…

Anyway, some have asked how I ended up picking the Albion…

My older brother the Man Utd fan, the FA cup final, and most likely to wind him up at the age of 3 (ever articulate lol) I apparently said “I’m going to support the blue team.”

Dad did the rest, and the rest is history.

Our focus now lies with mum, who after 54 years of marriage and being with dad since she was 16… well you can imagine that living on your own for the first time in your entire life at 77 is a little tricky … but we’re all there for her and together we’re able to remember the good times… dad wasn’t perfect btw, it’s important to mention that, but then again… none of us are…

Thanks again for all the posts, nsc really can be a special place, and a force for good… a little like our club, truly one of the best in the world

Total condolences, my Dad passed away through natural causes 2 years ago at 92.

If you look at the "what book are you reading" thread you can see I enjoy reading and I remember my Dad through books. The amount of times now I finish a book and think I would have passed that onto my Dad as he would have enjoyed it is endless.

Mine went at 92 not far off a year ago. He had a long and healthy life but deteriorated markedly over his last year or two -- painful to watch.

A really uplifting post but obviously tinged with the sadness about your father’s death.

A wonderful reminder of the catalyst football can play in father/son relationships and particularly poignant for me as my son is 9 and was the mascot at our recent triumph at Newcastle.

@Kosh I can’t put into words how proud and happy your Dad would have been all those years ago with you as mascot.

Great post Kosh, thank you for sharing. And I hope that your counselling helps you through it all. My father took a somewhat different approach to which football team I would be supporting, it was the Albion or move out.

Difficult to add anything to all the wise words here beyond thanking the @Kosh for sharing. It's a brilliant example of that wonderful parental quality of selflessness - a subtle but crucial part of parenting that is never as easy as it sounds and will not always be recognised until long after. And also as @Hugo Rune says, that special bond from football, exemplified so many times by NSC posts such as these.

You are indeed correct Kosh. No one is perfect. Just take a look at Jack Albion and you will realise why!!
