Thats a fair point, I'm sure the club did need the money.

But I don't see much difference between JK leaving and Caicedo or Cucurella leaving. I don't begrudge any of them a move for more money or a bigger club etc. I just don't see any of them as hero's or great club servants, they were just guys doing a job. I also get that some people do really like JK, which is absoultely fine as well, I wouldn't have said anything, except for the comment about the club finding him something because I don't think the club owe him anything.
Four seasons 138 appearances, you can compare him more to Bobby Zamora or Ally Mac than to Cucurella

I can assure you that he is a very decent man and served the Albion well. Think if you knew what John did for the club you would not make stupid comments like that.
Never said anything about what sort of man he is, in fact i quite clearly stated that I wasn't saying anything against him as a person. Maybe before you going go calling my comments stupid you should read the comments properly

Is this a personal issue rather than football ? Be honest ….

There's one obvious, very big difference. Caicedo or Cucurella would have been made for life financially, even if they'd stayed put into their 30s. Keeley could justifiably say he was trying to make a decent living, let alone furthering his career.

I don't blame Caicedo or Cucurella for wanting to move either - but it's mad to compare that to a player in Keeley's situation.

To Oldham as a player and Pompey as coach. I appreciate people on here know him, and I'm definitely not saying that he's a bad guy etc. I just don't think the club owe him anything.
People always argue that player's careers are short, and they have to do what's right for them, which is absolutely fine, I have no problem with that. I don't really have a problem with JK leaving twice, but I have a bit of a problem with making out he's a club hero, or that the club should find him something, as he was just a guy doing a job who left the moment other opportunities arose.
Oldham, he was sold by Lloyd, for a profit, in August 1990, with the greatest respect none of us as fans had any idea how bad the finances were back then, the offer was just too good to turn down, Lloyd's words not mine.

Again re the leaving for Pompey, as fans we don't, or should we know a lot of what goes on behind the scenes, coaching at the Withdean, under Dean Wilkins, there were budgetary constraints, he moved to Fratton Park with the club's blessing, so I don't class that as dumping on the Albion either.

And I've not said he should be given a job either.

But he is a player from a bygone era who will always have the affection of the Albion's core support.

Genuinely here, I know you haven't said he should have job, and I wasn't directing my posts to you. And i realise you have a personal connection here, so I wasn't trying to undermine what you said, which was wishing happy retirement. And I'm not disputing people's affection for him. People can like any players they want.

I was replying to another poster who said we should find him something. Which is something i don't agree with, that's all (although reading my first post back i can see it was a bit blunt). And that's not specific to John. Leaving him out of this for a moment, my point is about players looking after the career first. Which there is nothing wrong with. I just think when you make that decision, you can't then expect to be held in the same regard as players who have turned down chances to go elsewhere or stuck with us for a long time.

I don't dislike John, I thought he was an excellent keeper for us, probably one of if not the best in my time watching. But I don't hold him in the same fondness that others seem to. To me he was just a guy doing his job, nothing more nothing less. And I do think its odd that other players who have left to earn more money or move to bigger clubs are reviled yet to me that seems to be the same motivations. Note im not saying John Keeley should be reviled, i'm saying the other players shouldn't be.

Both at various stages downed tools. Jk downed pints rather than tools

Top man. I knew him a bit as I worked at Corals squash club while I was doing my A-levels, and used to have a bit of a knock about with him occasionally.

when I went off to Uni up North, he’d give me and a mate comps at all the Northern games.
