Blimey, really? I do know his daughter (Hannah Waterman) couldn't stand Lenska, but unless she hit him first with a shovel and he feared for his life I wonder what 'his side' is. Until I hear it I'm going with the views of two other posters (both female) that it is simply victim blaming as in 'she made me do it'. Happy to be proved wrong.

My neck of the woods is swarming with 'em. It's like Stella Street: Ross Kemp at my vets, Tess & Vernon at the gym, Clive Woodward walking on the moor, Ulrika in the bakery, Jim Rosenthal at the pub, Hoddle in the Chinese, Timmy Mallet at the hardware shop, Wendy Craig at the hairdressers, Lorraine Kelly in Costa and was chatting to Shakin Stevens the other week, he makes a right old fuss of my dogs when we see him. He's still got the jet black hair and that twinkle in his eye. Top man!
It was indeed, particularly the earlier series. Some of the banter and dialogue was great.
I also loved the uptight character of Sgt Chisholm, who was a nervous wreck after years of failing to convict Arfur, and who often took his frustration out verbally on his police partner, Sgt Jones.
Probably my favourite episode was 'What Makes Shammy Run?' - Chisholm to Arfur: "What are you selling now, Daley; second-hand poppadoms?"

Along with equally victim-blaming "She was asking for it", as also used as an 'excuse' by male sex offenders, and (historically) judges in rape cases; "contributory negligence" on the victim's part for wearing a short skirt, or being drunk
So, on the one hand he was a bit of a wife beater, but on the other hand he was light years ahead in accessibility for deaf people.

Ironically, he was an Elvis impersonator. He was in Elvis!, the West End show in the late seventies before he became a top ten star himself. He played... Elvis!. My first memory of him was as a regular on the 70s/80s revamp of Oh Boy! where they did old rock'n'roll songs. Carter explained, then Reagan asked if there were any witnesses to which Carter replied that the “Spade” over there had seen it.
After some other inquiries, Reagan then said” Get a statement from the sooty, and I’ll see you back at the factory “
I don’t think you’d hear the same conversation in any Police drama now.
