Butcher: McClaren must carry the can

Steve McClaren stood before a nation on Wednesday and moaned about the extraordinary decision that has left England on the brink of total and utter humiliation.

He was highlighting the injustice of the penalty given to Russia following a tackle outside the box by Wayne Rooney.

Sadly, Steve, the only extraordinary decision was the FA's to give you the England job in the first place.

Yet if there is any justice I hope that, when you vacate your position immediately after the final qualifying game against Croatia, chief executive Brian Barwick and the other bungling idiots at the FA have the decency to follow you through the door.

We have finally sunk to the bottom of the barrel. The fact we are on the brink of failing to qualify for the European Championship finals has plunged English football into the abyss.

We are the laughing stock of European football, an embarrassment to the shirt.

Harsh words, some would say, but the fact remains we have won nothing and look like winning nothing.

We are more ego than achievement, a nation driven by expectation rather than realism. People talked about the golden generation but it was fools' gold, more bling than the real thing.

Don't be under any illusions, leadership comes right from the top and there is an evident lack of it at the FA.

They are culpable for the mess we're in, and if they had a shred of decency about them they should already be clearing their desks at Soho Square.

In the good old days Barwick and Co would be publicly flogged and put in the stocks so we could throw tomatoes and rotten vegetables at them.

To be honest, I couldn't give a damn what happens in Israel next month. My opinion remains the same.

Unless there is a radical change in direction we will never see England ever win a major tournament again. Not in my time or yours.

And unless England unearth an astute manager who isn't blinded by egos and reputations it will never change. The problem remains that we seem to live in a bubble. The players believe their own press, they play up their chances of winning major tournaments and seem to think they need merely to turn up to collect the trophy.

I tire of listening to the crap that comes out of the England camp, be it from the manager or some of the players.

Unless we go back to basics and accept on the basis of achievement we are a distinctly average football nation, the pampered, overpaid stars will prevail and 10 years on from now we will be talking about the same thing.

Where is the honesty and integrity? When was the last time an England player actually came out and said it as it is?

In this debacle of a qualifying campaign we have already dropped 10 points and there is still a game to be played. It is unthinkable and unforgivable.

We should have walked through this group. Where the hell was the competition? It's inexcusable, it's a disastrous and an embarrassing, disgraceful mess.

Inevitably, though, you reap what you sow. Are we entirely surprised that we find ourselves at this juncture?

The writing has been on the wall for an age, it just seems that nobody could be bothered to read the script and make the required changes.

I still think back now to the last tournament England qualified for - the 2006 World Cup finals.

It wasn't a training camp in Germany, it was Hollywood.

The only headline-makers were the WAGS. It sums up the state of our game, really.

I suggest the next time we do qualify for a major tournament England take their tents and rough it.

Because on the basis of what they have achieved, a fireside meal and a sleeping bag are about all they deserve.

McLaren and Barwick to stay, it's about time the players took some responsibility. After the hatred McLaren had to go through at the Andorra away game we've been building nicely and have a real chance at qualifying for the World Cup in 2010, lets not throw it all away.

I think the whole set-up at Wembley is going to count against England from here on in. The ordinary fans have a whole menu of players they'll boo when they come on to the pitch, and the corporate members with their snouts in trough ensure that a third of Wembley is empty for much of the second half.

Possible solutions:

1. Don't pick players who are going to be booed by the ordinary fan. If they're being booed then then almost certainly deserve it. Fat Frank and Bentley certainly do.

2. Can't understand why the ordinary fans don't rain down half-eaten burgers, fag-ends and pints of piss on the corporate members section. Make it unuseable and that part of the stadium can be reclaimed for the true supporters.

Good luck

One would have thought that as an exceptional defender himself he would be able to organise a defence well but if you talk to any Brentford supporters they will tell you that their defence is dire.
