Technical advice required re Microsoft Taskbar

I have somehow managed to move the taskbar on this laptop from a horizontal position on the bottom of the screen to a vertical position on the right-hand side of the machine. The built in mouse on this machine has a life of its own.

I've tried the taskbar and start menu on the control panel but this hasn't helped. I've tried to drag it back to place but to no avail. It just seems to widen it. Any ideas?
