That's a good point, I was happy with the set of values I learned at Saltdean Middle School RE. Just make sure your kids aren't brainwashed into believing anything written in the bible actually happened.

That's what I don't get about people complaining about RE. It teaches you values and ethics from a lot of religions. Our RE teacher, Mr Hickman, was a bloody legend and taught anyone who actually listened to him lots about a whole variety of stuff in his lessons.

Then some little **** went are burnt down his classroom that contained all of his artifacts that were priceless to him.

That is unlikely to happen through a school RE lesson. Far more likely is that you will receive a bland presentation of very basic facts on Islam, Christianity, Judaism & maybe other world religions by teachers who have little grasp of what they are talking about. To be taught some well informed facts by people with a passionate conviction is what makes school worthwhile.

Anyway, to address your main point, if any brainwashing goes on today it is with the purpose of debunking the bible rather than inspiring people to believe in it. That is certainly the prevailing view in the way that science theories and RE are presented. Perhaps you might want to dust off a bible again and read it with an open mind. (ps. I may be one of your 'brainwashed' kids) ;)

I personally think a modern RE curriculum should cover all the major religions practised in this country.

So do I but how many lessons a week would be needed to even scratch the surface of each one?? Would probably be worth though it as it may get rid of a load of bigotry.

Our RE teacher (mid-forties, pillar of the community) was shagging with one of the sixth formers.

I don't object to kids learning about different sets of beliefs, and they can promote the notion (ridiculous I know) that we are all the same, and nations are not really that important.

when i was at school RE was compulsary but you didnt have to sit an exam for it. I actually quite enjoyed learning about religions and cultures, but that was probably more down to the method and approach of the teachers concerned.

The the real issue is not the subject subject itself but how some teach it. You will have those who will use it as a platform to preach their perfered faith and might well belittle others.

I personnally think it should be rolled into more of a rounded subject, maybe "philosophy" or "ethics", so that we come out of school with an idea of how religion has affected our society

I would love to stay and have a bit of banter about the bible with someone who has a Bertrand Russell quote as their signature, but I have got work to do! Another time perhaps, another thread, rather than hijacking this one.

talking about teachers Chappers (re your cool one), it is down to techers in general to promote subject (RE/Math/Whatever) and a good teacher can make a subject work for a class where as a bad teacher will break it....hence my RE years were with a pathetic teacher that did'nt have a clue about anything let alone RE!

I think most of us who might normally bite are tired of trying to argue with people who have no real understanding of what they are talking about. Sadly, it seems that if religious teaching in schools is mandatory, it is not being done very well. Discussing religion on here is like trying to discuss Falmer with people who keep saying 'all football fans are hooligans - and what about the bats?'

No-one said anything about you, certainly not me. Don't be such a girlie! Where does it say anything about you?

I was talking about previous experiences with people such as Phaedrus, who listed about 6 facts in one statement, all of which were simply wrong.
