Any ideas how much it is from Brighton to Worthing?

Depends what time of day and if you're getting in a Brighton cab or not. It seems to vary between £25 and £35. I did have one try it on one night and ask for £45. He didn't get it.

What an arse...

I was hoping no more than £35 to be honest for a 2am departure, when drunk from the clock tower! LOL

When you get in a taxi just before midnight, the fare will be less than after midnight.

The council regulate the fares, so all drivers should have the same fare, and it should be on the meter for you, and them, to see.

Most drivers have had 'runners', so are aware of that game - as well as people who "need to go to the night-teller machine to get money" or need dropping at the end of an alleyway where they need to pop into their flat and get cash (then they bunk a wall and leave the cabbie waiting for 20 minutes).

Well it's a good job you're here NMH as otherwise many people would have no idea of the accepted taxi etiquette.

In the real world however things don't work exactly like that. Most cabbies will give you a price for longer runs, like Brighton to Worthing, and then not stick the meter on. It's just a bit of a lottery to see what they will want for the job.

Not with Adur-plated cars it isn't. Our official fares go up at 10pm (only by 80p) then don't revert back until 6am.

If time is not particularly an issue, you could always get the night bus to Shoreham and cab it from there. Obviously depends on how many there are of you to make it viable.

That's actually not a bad bit of advice...

Might be cheaper to pre book a Worthing private hire taxi to come and pick you up at 2am as they will be returning to their local patch and if you agree the fare beforehand it will be "off the meter". On long jobs the driver might want payment up front so you dont do a runner. When I worked at BT we had a credit account with one of the big taxi firms in Brighton and on the jobs to Lancing and Worthing after midnight it would be a fixed price if there were no drops on the way or otherwise it was metered when there were 4 sharing and 3 dropped off in Hove and Downs Park.
