So .... ...... has gone so who do we get now as our target man replacement? Hoskins is simular to Barnes and i think between them they will fight it out for a starting place, but what the Judus offered us physically was strength, power and an ability to win headers and draw fouls. That is now missing and i cant wait to see who Gus has lined up for that role. Woods is not the answer in my opinion as rarely won a 50/50 header. Any ideas?

Either a bustling tall striker or a genuine small striker with searing pace to burn or both.

It's interesting that we are once again having the debate about a lack of or need for a genuine 20-25 goal a season striker,as a team we are capable of scoring throughout the team and i feel this should always be the case & was largely the reason why we rose to the summit early last season-however the fact remains that if it was not for our 20 goal strikers scoring when the goals from the rest of the team dried up a little, then we might not have been promoted.

I've said on another thread that I think our main strike force next season will be two mobile strikers (choose two from Barnes/Hoskins/an other - possibly coming back with Gus from Uruguay?) with support from midfield where we will have (hopefully) Noone/LuaLua out wide and either Bennett (if he stays) or a replacement such as Buckley who can play wide or switch inside just behind the strikers. As a Plan A, I think that suits Gus' style.

Plan B will be to bring on a target man to hold on to a lead or a point when we are under pressure. I don't think their striking ratio is the most important thing. It will be their experience and their ability to hold the ball that matters and some added height and arial ability. Of all the names I've seen Chris Iwelumo fits the bill more than most but I really have no idea whatsoever who it might be (and I could of course be entirely wrong in everything I've said) :)

It will be important to have someone who can muscle in when necessary. There generally needs to be a player strong enough to hold the ball up and to assist in clearing corners. This doesn't mean buying an immobile bullock, but more a player unafraid to get involved. At present, with all our guile and skilfulness, we're a tad feeble, and it will be vital to have a little more bulk in a division that it shouldn't be so easy to dance through.

Thing is what Murray offered and a target man would is extra defensive cover. How many headers did he win from corners and prevent us conceding goals? Also it allows you the option to go long when flicky-flicky isn't working, such as Southampton away. I know Gus doesn't like that style of play, but sometimes you are forced into it and it's no good having two small men up front in that case.
