Im taking my 5 year old brother to his first football match on Saturday and I want him to have a brilliant time, but I aint got a clue what kids would want to do before during and after the match.

For me match days usually involve going to the pub for lunch at 1 and then staying there untill 2.45 when we go and watch the game, and then back to the pub for more drinks!

Anyone who takes kids to matches have any idea of what to do?

By the way, im on a budget here!

My mates take their kids and pretty much do exactly what you normally do at the sportsman with the added exception of giving them a run aorund in the play area whilst you dirnk beer and buy them an ice cream at half time and thats them all set.

Fly kite before and after. Surely the match itself should provide entertainment from 3pm?

A small satchel of snacks is essential for kids! Helps relieve any times of boredom, and make sure he's got a warm jacket - nothing worse then being freezing cold - which is a distinct possibility at Withers - even in full sun!!

It turns out I'm in the family stand... and I love kids, so I'll keep him entertained. Also, cartons of juice always a better plan than out of date Withers Egyptian coke.

Ooooh - forgot - don't let him load up on drinks before the match - you'll be off to the loo continually...

A team list is also handy - so he can do a bit pf player spotting! Maybe catch a few signatures on it?

Ive just read in the argus that the programmes are half price so im buying one of them, and I'll try and get a few players to sign it for him.

The only floor in that plan is that were sitting in the family stand and the players dont tend to go over there often!

And Ginadim, come and find me and hes yours for the match!

5 years old is very young and he will get bored. Exactly as Tedebear says, take both snacks and things to do. Pre-match - pub is great but go in at 2 O'clock rather than 1 O'clock. Things to beware of: he will want the most expensive burger and chips and will leave half of them. He will also want to go to the shop and buy something expensive and will have forgotten about it by the end of the game. But who can deny a child in the club shop? Whatever, it will be a landmark day for him - buy him a programme to remember it and have a great day.

get their about 1230,buy a programme then wait by the carpark, then get all the players to sign his shirt and programme, then at 1,pop into pub and have a cold beer while your son can play footy in the play area outside, then go to match, watch gully in the shoot out.it hasnt failed once this season for my lad and his mates
