The Taj family have made an absolute fortune from their stores, so it would suggest that there was sufficient demand. However, I would imagine that they are not able to compete with the large supermarkets when it comes to belt tightening. You can't compete with stores that are happy to make a loss of a whole host of products when they house practically everything you could possibly need.
There obviously was sufficient demand when the economy was buoyant.

Actually, I wonder if their expansion from 2 to 3 shops has been their downfall (if they are actually in financial trouble)? As countless other businesses have learned to their cost, a sharp & unexpected downturn in the economy can play havoc with their sustainable viability.
