Exactly what I said when he did it. He wanted to get booked so he didn't have to go to Azerbaijan. I don't believe it had anything to do with the injury. Wouldn't surprise me if he'd intended doing it right from the start of the match under Real Madrid orders.
I really don't think it's worth making a big deal over this, it happens all the time and I don't think it makes any difference if a player admits too it. The press will have a go though, because it's Beckham.
A good story from Tony Cascarino in The Times yesterday;
SOMETIMES, PLAYERS commit to a tackle knowing that there is a strong chance that they will be booked. It may seem ridiculous, but on some occasions, they are probably not overly concerned about the consequences. When David Beckham was booked for a clumsy challenge on Ben Thatcher it took me back to a hilarious incident playing for Ireland.
Leading comfortably midway through the second half, a team-mate gestured to me to lay the ball off to him but leave it a bit short. About ten minutes later, I duly obliged and he went clattering into an opponent earning himself a yellow card. I twigged what he was up to when I realised that he was then suspended from the next match four days later, which oddly enough, was away to Lithuania. In the dressing-room after the match, he offered me a hug and said: “Cheers for that, I don’t have to make that disastrous away trip now.”
Some of the other players expressed their jealousy because it meant that he could enjoy a few extra days off with his family

The argument is that Beckham is claiming it was to get his booking out of the way because he knew he wouldn't be fit for Azerbaijan anyway. Its quite clear though that its basically because he didn't want to go to a country which is in a technological time warp of 1974, and who's people eat household pets with their shreddies.
Not that I blame Beckham, just wish he'd be honest about it.

What kind of example is he giving to kids when he says "go out and deliberatley booked by kicking another player so that you dont miss games after injury!"...especially when he could've caused serious injury to the opposing player....its f***ing disgraceful and as someone who plays football alot I'm sickened by it, if anyone owned up to do that by kicking me I'd f***ing nut 'em! (then get sent off....but thats another matter)
