Where did it all begin?
My name is June Sarpong and I present T4 on Channel 4 Sunday mornings. When The Oprah Winfrey Show first started over here - I actually think it was on Channel 4 - I was watching it and I thought OHHHH that's what I want to do. Mummy I want to be on telly!
The basics
It wasn't easy, but I have been very lucky that one job has always seemed to lead onto the next. I'll get up at half four in the morning, the car will come and get me at half five and then I'll get to the studio. A bit of makeup, change, and then we start filming at eight and go through 'til about two.
A good start
I started out doing work experience at Kiss FM station in London and then I went from there to work at a record company. So I did the record company thing for a bit at Arista which was cool because I had really cool bands to look after. We had Usher and Whitney Houston and people like that and then from there Planet Pop which was a T4 show, so a bit like what Pop World is now, and then T4.
Run-a-round
Well I was doing everything. I was not only making coffee I was getting spaghetti believe it or not.
Way cool
I really don't have any bad days because I love my job and it's different, it's great. I feel so fortunate to go to work and know that everyday is going to be different.
Advice
My advice for young people who want to present on telly: make sure you don't get lumbered with Vernon Kay whatever you do. No, I think it's just practise - even if it's just talking in front of the mirror - getting used to being on camera or whatever, and also knowing what type of show you want to do and go for that. I love talking you know so to be paid to talk just works for me.
