England boss Sven Goran Eriksson has told Sky Sports News he may have to find a holding midfielder before the World Cup finals next summer.

The composition of England's midfield has been the subject of fierce debate over the past twelve months, with doubts raised as to the compatibility of preferred central pairing Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.

The extensive attacking talents of the second and third placed finishers in the European Footballer of the Year award have to be reigned in somewhat, with defensive responsibilities paramount at the highest level.

The Swede experimented with Tottenham's Ledley King in a withdrawn role in the 3-2 friendly defeat of Argentina, and has previously indicated he will employ the tactic again against the biggest teams in Germany.

Now Eriksson, who insisted that Lampard and Gerrard can play together at the heart of the team, has stated he has to identify the perfect man for the role, just six months before world football's biggest competition gets underway.

"They can do it - of course they can do it," he told Sky Sports News. "But if we want to have one sitting midfielder then we have to find one.

"It's one area which we are going to look at, that's for sure, because maybe you need it at some stage in the World Cup."

Aside from King, other options include Newcastle's Scott Parker and Manchester United's Alan Smith, whilst Joey Barton's sparkling recent form at Manchester City has led to calls for international recognition.

Whilst Eriksson has already decided on the majority of players who will be making the trip to Germany, he conceded that there was still a chance for hopefuls to get a chance for The Three Lions.

"There's time for other players to knock on the door. I will open it maybe."

Carrick plays for totters in the position that King plays for England.

What's that all about?

It absolutely amazes me that a manager who is paid so much to do a job that demands so little time-wise hasn't managed to work out that Gerrard and Lampard DON'T WORK TOGETHER. How are we still trying to rectify this problem? How have we got to within three games of the World Cup without having tried either Carrick or Parker in that role properly?

If Lampard and Gerrard start together in the World Cup, I'll be a little upset.

Weren't we losing when King was playing, and then we played the midfield 4 of Cole, Lampard, Gerrard, Beckham we turned it around? It's nice to have a holding player in the squad, but that player won't start.

And yes - it has to be Carrick of Parker

Interesting today Parker said he had given up playing for England.

I agree, Carrick has been in cracking form this year.

Carrick is as important to Spurs as Gerrard to Liverpool, but we dont hear much of Carrick as the media are creaming over Gerrard.

Sure, and that's when it can work - when we're chasing a game, and need to go all-out. That's no position to take from the off, though.

And as it happens, I'd go with Carrick or Parker, in that order of preference, over King. I think either would have more than held their own against the Argies.

I'd still rather King/Lampard or Gerrard than the two together though - King may have had one average match, but FL and SG have had dozens together, and those against the likes of Wales and Northern Ireland.

Carrick is a better passer than Parker but Parker is a better tackler, so Parker gets the nod for me out of those two.

I'm not sure Carrick is as important to Spurs as Gerrard is to Liverpool. Im sure Spurs could replace him easier than Liverpool could replace Gerrard.

Gerrard and Lampard are the two best centre midfielders in the premier league and should play. If (and for the record it shouldn't be) it is to be changed i'd play Phil Neville more combative than Parker and Carrick and experienced.

Phil Neville isn't more combative then Parker.

Gerrard and Lampard may be the best two central midfieldeers in the league (I don't think so but that's neither here nor there) but the fact is they don't, can't, and won't ever work as a partnership in the centre of midfield.
