'dean' could be an evolution of 'down', as in valley..?

Don't think they're connected but the Downs and dunes are derived from the same word (dun).

Combe or Coomb (as in Moulsecoomb) is also a valley, a word the Saxons borrowed from the Britons and which continues to be used in Welsh today (cwm).

What I'd like to know is this: if dean means valley, then why is Coldean built on a bleeding steep hill?

It's no at the top of the hill though is it?

From where I sit at work in Bevendean I can see all 3 sides of the valley.

Hah...you try pushing a buggy up it: Coldean's steep enough. And what if you live at the top part of hawkhurst Road, that is the top of the hill?

Bevendean is clearly a valley, as is Westdene. But Hollingdean isn't nor is Woodingdean.
