A bit like people saying 'The Withdean' I have noticed a lot of people calling Sussex By The Sea, GOOD OLD Sussex By The Sea.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the song is called SUSSEX BY THE SEA? Not being pedantic, am just wondering if there's a reason (apart from obviously the lyrics) that people refer to it with the Good Old bit - and even abbreviate on here with GOSBTS - It's always intrigued me personally...?

Thanks

Seeing "GOSBTS" written down is a lot less annoying than hearing people actually singing "Oh we're going up TO-OO win the Cup"...
Something that makes absolutely no sense at all.

I far prefer the cricket version

Good Old Sussex by the Sea, Good Old Sussex By the Sea
You can tell them all that we stand or fall
For Sussex by the Sea.

Is that not just the original version?

On the way up the M23 to Wembley in '83 it made PERFECT sense.

Exactly! That one time only when it referred to an actually physical journey!

I think I'd rather have Fat Boy Slim than hear 'going up to win the cup' one more time ...

Really? You've never mentioned this before

I thought THIS was the original version?
Nope. There are five verses in the original version. The Eastbourne Cousins site only lists three of these.

The full version was published in the Albion programme for the SBTS centenary celebrations in 2007. Here it is, yet again:-

1st verse
Now is the time for marching, now let your hearts be gay
Hark to the merry bugles sounding along our way.
So let your voices ring my boys, and take the time from me
And I’ll sing you a song as we march along
Of Sussex by the sea

Chorus
For we're the men from Sussex, Sussex by the sea
We plough and sow and reap and mow
And useful men are we
So when you go to Sussex, whoever you may be,
You can tell them all that we stand or fall
For Sussex by the sea

Refrain
Sussex, Sussex by the sea
Good old Sussex by the sea!
You may tell them all we stand or fall
For Sussex by the sea..

2nd verse
Up in the morning early, start at the break of day
March till the evening shadows, tell us it's time to stay.
We're always moving on me boys, so take your time from me
And sing this song as we march along,
Of Sussex by the sea.

Chorus & Refrain

3rd verse
Light is the love of a soldier; that's what the ladies say
Lightly he goes a wooing, lightly he rides away
In love and war, we always are as fair as fair can be
And a soldier boy is the ladies joy
In Sussex by the sea

Chorus & Refrain
4th verse
Far o'er the seas we soldier, wide through the world we roam
Far from the kind hearts yonder, far from our dear old homes
But ne'er shall we forget, my boys, and true we'll ever be.
To the girls so kind that we left behind
In Sussex by the sea

Chorus & Refrain

5th verse
Sometimes your feet are weary, sometimes the way is long,
Sometimes the day is dreary, sometimes the world goes wrong.
But if you let your voices ring, your cares will fly away,
So we'll sing you a song as we march along
Of Sussex by the sea

I think it is jolly stirring tune, best heard at full blast by a decent military band, preferrably at Lewes Bonfire and in the early hours of the morning!

The band that I have heard doing it the best are The Kohima Band (regimental band of the 3rd Battalion The Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment Territorial Army) who not only sound the part but look the part as well. Perhaps they could play it on the pitch prior to the first game at Amex.
