Well were they?

Answer honestly, don't go looking at stats.

Simple yes or no for the various age groups

couldn't be arsed to do more than 10 so don't moan if you are over 60 and didn't get your own age range. And if you're under 10, go to bed:angry:

NOTHING (except last summer possibly) can even get close to competing with the summers of 96 & 97 IMHO!

The last 14 years have seen the 10 hottest summers on record.

This might be a wet summer but it hasn't been cold.

What??! I haven't taken my fleece off for half of it, the only time it was hot was when I was on holiday - out of this country!

I can only assume you're not old enough to remember the summer of 1976

Last summer recorded the hottest temperature on record in this country, there was very little rain from the begginning of spring last year right through to November. This year its been the wettest august since records began, but surely thats just nature catching up on itself.what goes around comes around....... now its just time for the big winter blizzard on christmas eve thats surely overdue :drink:

And 77.

There were two good summers following each other.
It wasn't necessarily hot (quite pleasant) but we went for weeks and weeks without any rain at all. In fact in Yorkshire the water shortage got so bad that stand pipes were actually installed on street corners but we didn't have to use them eventually.

This summer has been warm. Perhaps it feels warmer to me because I have returned to the south.

I was just wondering if different age groups all felt that summers were hotter when they were a kid. Listening to some people you would think thats the case and I too have a kind of nostalgic memory of summers going on for ever.

Obviously if everyone thought that summers were better when they were younger then it would be utter bollocks cos that would mean we've had 50 years of uninterrupted beautiful summers, and, well, we haven't.

Still, it seems NSC isn't a orisoner to nostalgia. 17 have said yes they were so far and 10 No.

I don't know where you live Bobby's Gull but in London, I haven't had a wear a jacket or sweater once, not even at night, I've been wearing shorts pretty much every day: it's been wet but warm. Last weekend, we went out picking blackberries. When I was a child, blackberrying was a mid-Sept activity, the fact that they're ripe now, shows what a warm summer it's been.

People do seem to have strange nostalgic ideas about summer. I remember a lot of wet days when I was desperate to go out but the weather prevented me.

As I posted above, the summers are now much longer and hotter - that's the reality.

With the exception of 76, I think that we seem to get higher temperatures now more often than when I was growing up.
Sure they seemed longer in those days, but years as a whole have undoubtedly got shorter since my mid 30s.

It has been a disappointing summer but we have had a fair nmber of crap summers in the past as well, 73 and 85 spring to mind. What is seriously pissing me off is that I am back at work on Tuesday after 2 weeks off and the forecast is for warm dry weather.

Seaford Where else!
Summers weren't as hot but were longer and more consistent. Also winters were better back in the 70's and 80's too...more snow!!

'76 was too hot, especially for a boy aged 7 1/2!

Great fun though watching all the big red fire engines racing around putting out fires & the big green army vehicles setting up water supplies.

Downside was having a bath in 1 inch of water AFTER my two brothers had already used it :(
