I hope I'm not derailing, but the first thing that entered my head was really good bands with really shit names. Top of my list is 'toad, the wet sprocket'. I mean, what were they thinking?

Yep! One very big Yank band that didn't make much of a splash over here being The Dave Matthews Band, their lead singer and song writer being...Dave Matthews.

Possibly already mentioned - Wet, Wet, Wet (WTF?!)

It's a shame this is about successful bands as my mate's brother at school had a band called Suck My Penis Basil Brush and when they didn't get any gigs with that they changed it to "Suddenly A Chopsick Was In My Eye".

I've always thought "The Sex Pistols" was an awful name for a band but the winner by a country mile has to be Kajagoogoo

Everything they did? WOW

I put two 'best of' CDs on my ipod ten years ago, then took them off. I grew up with the Beatles. I loved them as a kid. Now I find them irritating. McCartney destroyed his cred with all that bollocks he released with Wings. Give Ireland Back To the Irish. Mull of Kin Tyre. FFS. I have 'Imagine' on vinyl, but not on CD. Lennon was quite narcissistic and.....dull. If he hadn't been shot.....his last LP was embarrassing. George? Pah. As for Ringo. For me their name and what they are fit together well.

George Pah? Strongly disagree, here’s just one reason

Not sure the Grateful Dead are a great band. Boring shite more like. Yet.....the name is good. As is electric prunes. We differ to beg.

OK, here are a few really great bands with really shit names:

The Mothers of Invention

Mahogany Rush

Squeeze

Diary of Dreams

Klangstabil

The latter are a bit obscure, so (brace yourself).... I will paste youtube vids. No, I will. I am an absolute sucker for English sung with a German accent. Actually.....I think these boys are the winner.

To be fair, I have always been meaning to investigate George a bit more. But I have an instinctive aversion to the super-popular, so always found myself in pursuit of otherness. Bowie and Madonna are the only really massive stars (that transcent music itself) who have stood the test of time for me. I'd rather seek out something new
