Looking in to travel for my son hove to falmer for college, totaly confused as to cheapest option now:shrug:

The Brighton Unizone card (he'll need a NUS card as well) http://www.southernrailway.com/tickets-and-fares/ticket-types/16/ represents good value for unlimited travel in the zone which includes Hove and Falmer.

The other alternative is for him to get the free Sussex Student Card (he'll need to download the form, get his college to sign it and then he sends it off) so he can get 1/3 off of season ticket prices. Do the figures and see which works out best. Link for card here: http://www.connexions360.org.uk/travel/publictransport/pages/raildiscounts.aspx

Caution: Sussex Student Card took over a week to arrive and you have to book tickets minimum 7 days in advance, so Unizone ticket in the meantime might be best (if he has a NUS card), or you may have to suffer a full fare season ticket for a while like we did.

Any problems, or you need more info, just ask and I'll be glad to help.

Good luck.

Update to this thread for all those with kids starting college/6th form next week.

The latest Sussex Student Card that gives students 1/3 off of season ticket prices even before 10am (not to be confused with a 16-25 railcard) can be printed off here:

https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/media/5102/sussex_student_card_application_form.pdf (it's for all of Sussex, not just West as indicated in the link).

This represents great value but not sure how it would compare for those in Brighton & Hove and West Sussex Unizone area. Southern rail still hasn't set up the Hastings scheme despite promising to do so

Students will have to get this form signed at their college and then follow the application procedure and then book tickets in advance, so it will take a while for savings to kick in thanks to the poorly thought out system, so you'll have to look into weekly season ticket or alternatives until then. But it is a great saving once you're up and running.

Added this as part of my original thread as there's good info on this thread from others worth reading back on. Any questions, feel free to ask. I've had two years experience of it with our eldest and now just starting another two years with the next one down.

Here's the 360.org site link that the form came from as well:
