Some students have holed themselves up in one of the uni buildings protesting. Not quite sure what it is about but probably something to do with the closing of the chemistry unit. I was asked to film them when they are removed so they would be able to prosectute if they had done any damage. I refused, saying if I disagreed with what they were doing, say if they were with the BNP, I would happily do it but that I didn't feel comfortable if nobody is sure why and if I, as the case seems to be, agree with them. Was I right to do this? Don't think my boss is to happy.

It could also be about the AUT strikes. Students round here are getting really really pissed off about it

It's about them closing a chemistry unit. The students came up with a plan where the work could be covered by other lecturers. It seems that has been rejected.
I've just been sat in a meeting about the strike action by academic staff. Unless resolved the fall out is going to be MASSIVE. The worse thing for admin staff here is that we have to try and carry on regardless but it's more than doubling our workload as we are the ones who have to try and keep the studnets up to date with what's going on and whether they are goingto be awarded tehir degrees and go to their graduation ceremonies. Currently it looks as if the ceremonies in July at least will be cancelled and a lot of people will be losing lots of money in plane tickets, hotels and all sorts. It's a right MESS.

To be honest, my sympathy for the lecturers is almost up now. They said that it wouldnt affect students, and now it has. Did you know that some of the 3rd years may not be able to graduate this year because of them?
I'm quite lucky, in that ive only got 2 pieces of coursework due back to me (that was meant to be returned quite a while ago) - however i know of people who arent sure whether their dissertations are going to get marked this year or not.
It could affect me getting into nursing if it doesnt get resolved in time, however, the nursing people are being really nice about it, as they arent involved with the union at all.

Its called Professionalism, doing your job regardless of personal prejudices, thats discriminating against people because of race, sex or beleifs etc.
What would the world be like if everyone took that attitude? How can you critisise people with prejudices when you wear yours on your sleave?
There is also a big difference between holding a prejudice and acting on it.
One that puts you in the same camp as Combat 18 rather than the BNP.
