Strange sight at copa libertadores game on Thursday

I was watching a game between Libertad and Palmeiras, a game which I'd had a bet on B365 and was being streamed live from their website.
Now, the ref gave libertad a free-kick about 30 yards from goal. Palmeiras set up a defensive wall but wasn't the required 10yards so the ref walk the 10yards from the ball, pulled out a can of spray paint, then sprayed a long white line onto the grass and got the wall to move to that.
Now I thought, what a good idea but is this common practice in South American football?

I have seen this before, the spray he uses vanishes after a few minutes.

same practice in the MLS. its spray paint which fades away after about a minute

Never seen this before, but sounds like a great idea. Should also have a rule where if they encroach the freekick goes forward 10 yards as well
