Had to phone up 5 live as they've just been discussing the Coe/Ovett era.
Managed to get on air & pay homage to a true Brighton legend.
I shall be running past the man's statue in a mo'!

At the foot of the downs
As a nipper Ovet lived in Surrenden Road next door to my pa,

Ovett a great runner and humanitarian. He gave one of his gold medals to a kid with disabilities.

After receiving a bronze medal, Coe's dad and his trainer stated that "It was worthless and would be put in a draw".

I once ran againgst old ovett and beat him to the first 100m in a race around Stamner Park. Guess who won?

LC:lol:

Steve Ovett is a Brighton legend. Always used to get up my nose how the BBC used to crawl to Coe and look down at our Steve.

When Coe was in the Sunday tabloids recently about his mistress and how he tried to force her to have an abortion it showed the weasel up for his true colours.

I almost ran him over once when he was on a training run. Good thing I didn't because he was my hero. He shouldn't have run out in front of my car though.

I did some building work for Steve Ovett when he lived near Seven dials. He was very friendly and approachable-he just didn't like the media intruding into his private life

Might be memory playing tricks, but it seemed at the time like Ovett always trained to reach the peak of physical condition for his battles with Ovett, only to spoil it all by having a dodgy curry the night before every major final and always running with horrendous stomach cramps.

Que???

I think you mean't to put a "Coe" in there somewhere mate!
I also think you remember LA '84 where Ovett suffered from asthma.
