Ran with him, I think twice. These were training events for long distance runners where he would pop in and give us few tips sort of thing. At the time I really prefferred Coe... can't remember why, but seemed a nice guy.

When I say WITH him I was one schoolboy in about 200 :(

A True Brightonian and English sporting legend - we should be proud of his achievements.

As a young lad he came to my school (Patcham Middle) to show us youngsters his medal collection. He was regularly seen pounding the pavements around Patcham with one of my old school teachers from Patcham - a Scot called Matt Patterson.

I remember his running era with great fondness - and just loved watching him pace himself for the final moments when he would just leave the field behind. Truly exciting!

What a guy!

What a guy!

Well, yes, apart from that Ovett seemed to go down with Kitson-like regularity - if memory serves - anytime he got into a major final. Always seemed to be battling against some gut pain or other, leaving clean-living 'Seb' Coe to just nudge him out of first place on a regular basis.

That was at the 84 Olympics in LA where he was suffering from a virus infection that affected him for quite a while.

He regularly beat Coe & vice versa, that's what made it so exciting.
Ovett was more of a tactical racer, he loved the argy bargy, then kicking on the final bend, fantastic to watch.

Probably worried about Coe being behind him,and not being quite fast enough to protect his rear!Quite why Coe is a Lord I have no idea, unless Mandelbum has been involved

As a kid I remember him taking on the hills of Hollingdean in his pre Moscow Olympics training. During my two year stint working for the Post Office in my teens I also delivered mail to his Montpelier Crescent abode. Any (ex)posties out there - that walk 'The Windlesham' was a killer and certainly no paper round. Ahhh memories of North Road Sorting Office - good times :)
Loved that Coe / Ovett rivalry in the 80s - made the front page news often.
