I cannot for the life of me wonder why everyone is so stuck on Steve Cottrell for a possible manager. He took a non league club up by playing hoof and hope and none of his teams have impressed me at all when weve played them and he sounds like a complete berk when he talks. NO!NO!NO!NO!

He certainly did work wonders at Cheltenham - to take them from non league to Division Three via the Conference and up to Division Two. He spent little to no money at during his time there. And lets be honest Cheltenham are not a Second Division club so to get them there from the Gloucester league or wherever in five years is some achievement (Cheltenham were not promoted to the conference until the 1997/1998 season). My memory may be slightly hazy but from what I remember when we beat them at Withdean with a last minute strike back in September 1999, I seem to remember thinking that they outplayed us during the first half.

Also, his Cheltenham team may play have played long ball, but it was effective for him. And although I wouldn’t like to see the long ball at the Albion, at Cheltenham he may have being doing the best he could with limited resources and perhaps at a club like the Albion he could fashion a team that plays better football.

My only problem with him is how quickly he decided to join Sunderland after signing a contract with Stoke.

That is a good point. Mind you, having had his fingers burnt he may not be ready to jump ship so quickly again.

And let's face it. Who has stayed long term with us recently?

I posted earlier that Cotterill would be my first Choice and Kinnear would be my second. Either would do for me, as would the Oldham manager (but hang on... we don't take managers off other clubs do we? actually I can't remember us ever doing that! can anyone else think of a time when we did?)

That's true, but I'd rather have a manager who's the envy of other clubs than someone so crap no-one else wants them.

Be fair on Knight - the only mistakes (short-term ones too) that he made were Wood and Hinshelwood. Horton, Adams, Taylor, Coppell is a great managerial list.

I think Cotterill suits our circumstances i.e. we've got nothing in our favour except a bunch of big-hearted players and he's been used to that. What we don't need right now is some aspiring young boss who wants us to be Brazil, and signs a load of floppy-haired fancy dans!

(I'd even go as far as to say hinsh's biggest problem was over-ambition - he wanted us to 'play' a bit more and tried to take teams on.... at First Division level that was a mistake because our players just weren't good enough).

Don't forget Cotterill was being groomed in the England set up as a young up coming coach and has several good coaching badges. I am sure these don't endorse the long ball.

Bang on. Never have we needed ball to feet more with Leon's skills up front. Just look what happened to him when Chirs Turner played hoof and hope at Sheff Wed.

Cotterill was manager of the worst hump-it-up-and-chase-it merchants I have ever ever seen, they spent the entire game against us lumping it to that oaf Julian Alsop.

1) Our main striker is 5'4" tall.

2) Cotterill has since spent 6 months in the company of that key exponent of "total football" Howard Wilkinson.

Is he the man for us? Go figure....
