Staying in the Liverpool area

Wondered if anyone here has spent a couple of nights in Liverpool or whether you would recomend somewhere nearby like Warrington.

I have some friends over here (it's true) with a couple of young boys who want to spend a few days there in easter and I want to sound like I know what I'm talking about.

I think they want to take a match in too.

Many thanks

Closest I have stayed to Liverpool was the Wirral, was a really smart place called Thornton Hough, wouldn't really have been my choice as it was a bit posh but the company picked up the tab. Other than that I usually stay in Manchester whenever I have to visit the north west, found a really good hotel right beside Old Trafford, convenient for the M62 and close to a tram stop to get into the city centre.

Yeah that's an option, I was really after area recomendations as they seem to have the opinion that Liverpool's a bit dodgy which I can neither confirm nor deny.

Just the other side of the mersy, not really dodgy, but wouldn't choose there to live

There are some parts of Liverpool that are OK, you are probably better off asking a local. I have only visited the city a couple of times and didn't spend the night there, think you would be fine with some of the areas on the outskirts as they look OK. Two of my colleagues did stay there for the night, in the hotel whose name escapes me that appeared on a TV documentary (fly on the wall type, not Panorama or the World in Action).

I've been to warrington before and it seemed a bit of a dump. Stayed in a holiday inn next to this club called Mr Smiths and in my drunken haze pulled a complete rotter, she must have been about 13/14 stone. She wouldn't even let me do her up the arse which is the least you'd expect from a fat bird

Ive also stayed in New Brighton and Wallasey Village. Its basically a run down seaside resort but I found it OK. There are a few hotels in the Dock area which could be worth looking at. Places nearby which could be possibliites are Southport and Haydock.

Stay in Southport.

It's got loads of bars, restaurants, clubs and hotels.

Only problem is Lawrenson, Hansen and Dalglish all live there.

Quality golf courses as well.

20/25 minutes from Liverpool.

Only ever stayed there during the Grand National meeting, which probably isn't the best time to see Liverpool, but it's true there's some okay hotels down near the Albert Docks (the Ibis etc). Whole place has come up a lot over the last 15 years, though there's still a few bits (Bootle being one) that make the worst parts of Brighton look like Monaco. At least the scousers aren't as far up their own arses as the mancs.

Southport's good too, if you don't mind a 20-minute drive. Much quieter, anyway.

I've got quite a bit of knowledge of the area. My other half is from Liverpool and I lived in Warrington for three years.

Nothing wrong with Liverpool, but I would recommend Southport where her parents have moved (actually a village outside)

Southport is a small seaside resort that quite frankly puts places like that down south to shame. 30 minutes (or less) drive to Liverpool.

A good few restaurants, pubs and very friendly.

Can't go wrong with Southport.

Rooms in the Adelphi are meant to be about £75, but at about 1.00am on Friday and Saturday nights, they put a little sandwich board outside the front entrance, selling off the empty rooms for £20, to anyone who's pulled some tat in one of the clubs.

I have availed myself [no tat you understand, but it was cheaper than a cab home].

Any of the hotels near the Kings Dock are OK as mentioned earlier the Ibis is OK, no late bar though, the Crowne Plaza is excellent if you've got a few quid.

Head for the building with the Liver bird on top it's next door and the dock is about a mile away along the same road.

I recommend the city centre and the docks which are excellent for a night out. As long as you don't venture out to the estates Wavertree / Croxteith etc you will be fine, in fact I think Brighton CC is rougher personally.

it depends what you want out of the hotel. The new travelodge is nice and 'cheap', just sent a colleague to the holiday inn in the city center aswell, so i'll have feedback next week on that one too!

Yep, I'd forgotten there's no late bar. There is an all-you-can-fit-on-a-plate brekkie though, which almost balances things up...

I used to live in Wigan and have a long standing affection for SOuthport which is IMHO a well kept secret. Lovely place are all the small resorts down the coast to Clitheroe, any of those are handy for Liverpool but very pleasant.
