Is this for real? Apparently some guy is suing Inter Milan for having a St. George Cross strip. Maybe England itself is soon to be outlawed...

Inter Milan football strip 'offends Muslims'By Megan Levy
Last Updated: 3:25pm GMT 12/12/2007

A football strip worn by Italian team Inter Milan is at the centre of a legal row after a lawyer claimed it offended "Muslim sensibilities".

Players wore the new strip – a white shirt with large red cross on it – in a Champions League match last month against Turkish team Fenerbahçe to celebrate the club’s centenary.

But a Turkish lawyer, Baris Kaska, took exception to the "Crusader-style" cross which he said symbolised "Western racist superiority over Islam".

He claimed the offending shirt reminded Turks of an emblem of the Christian order of the Knights Templar.

Mr Kaska, who specialises in European law, has lodged a complaint in a local court against the club.

He is seeking damages, and is appealing to Uefa to annul the match, which Inter Milan won 3-0.

Mr Kaska told the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia: "That cross only brings one thing to mind - the symbol of the Templar Knights.

"It made me think immediately of the bloody days of the past. While I was watching the game I felt profound grief in my soul."

advertisementHe said the court had contacted both Uefa and Fifa to convey his demand that Inter Milan should be "heavily fined for displaying an offensive symbol".

Inter Milan officials are reportedly "astounded" at the controversy.

They have pointed out that a red cross on a white background was the symbol of the city of Milan, and that many Italian football clubs have incorporated the cross on their shirts.

It's also part of the City of London's badge. He's a very sad man who hopefully will be told to stop behaving like a complete child.

I have to say......

I WANT ONE OF THESE

The supreme irony is that the most common story about the person who became St George was actually... Turkish.

Actually, from a land which is now part of Turkey, anyway.

Interesting they never sued Inter in the 1920s, when they wore it as their HOME shirt. It's not actually the St George's Cross, it's just the same design. I know that sounds daft but St George is the patron saint of many things, but not of the City of Milan.

What a twat.

Way out west
Very smart strip...does that mean that if St Pauli ever played in England that they couldn't wear their brown shirts because of an association with Oswald Moseley and the Fascists in the 1930's...lunacy!!!

I wore that shirt at Wembley for the Croatia match last month. NOT a lucky shirt so far. :-(

This is a nothing story, generated by some nobody of a lawyer, who just wants the publicity.

Don't wade in with all the "political correctness gone mad" crap, because this guy quite clearly only wants the money and/or fame.

It's not exactly our flag to defend anyway, as Alan says, St George was Turkish (no irony spotted by the lawyer there then), and the design features on the flags of various countries, cities and coats of arms, including Milan, Genoa, Georgia (the country), New South Wales and Barcelona.

...
That's it in a nutshell. I'm sure there are some muslims who are 'offended' by any flag or emblem that resembles the Cross. I'm equally sure (as per the 'Christmas tree' thread) that there are muslims/jews/hindus etc who are 'offended' by Christmas. On the other side of the coin there are white people who think all non-white Britons should be sent back to Bongo-Bongo land.

They all should be told to shut up and join the rest of us in the 21st century.

Saint George/Sant Jordi is also the patron saint of Catalunya, and FC Barcelona have the design on their badge also.

And a supremer irony is that the cross depicted on the Inter shirt isn't the cross of St George.

It's the cross of the patron saint of the city ... St Ambrose.

During the fascist era, Mussolini made Internazionale change their name to Ambrosiana.
